The present work was written for a number of audiences in an effort to highlight as well as address the rampant sexual deviancy and aggression occurring within many athlete cultures. The book will be of interest beyond the sports and age-levels of those interviewed for the study since sexual deviancy and aggression appeared in an array of athlete cultures. The fact that certain negative practices were discovered at the high school level means that millions of middle and high school coaches and athletes, in addition to those at elite levels, need this information to keep deviant practices from gaining a foothold and becoming normalized within youth-oriented sports cultures. The book will also be a welcomed addition in courses such as sociology of sport, sports psychology, women's studies, and an array of sociology classes including deviant behavior.

In 2002, Nick T. Pappas completed his doctorate degree in Human Development and Family Science with a minor in the Sociology of Sport at The Ohio State University, while he coached the OSU Women's Club Hockey Team for four years. His unpublished dissertation titled, "On the Ice and Off the Rink: A Qualitative Study of Hockey Players' Aggression," highlighted out- of-sport athlete aggression against males and females and involved interviews with 23 collegiate and/or minor professional athletes. This work served as the foundation for the title "The Dark Side of Sport", because the data Dr. Pappas discovered and withheld from his dissertation involved sexually deviant, but not necessarily aggressive behavior.
