This very first handbook on the topic summarizes the current concepts and brings together in one volume the critical arguments concerning the mechanisms relevant to immunodominance. In invited chapters written by the leaders in the field, the mechanisms whereby the immune system chooses the parts of a recognized pathogen in order to start the immune response are explained and the variety of biologic processes are identified that contribute to that choice.
From the contents:
- Mechanics of antigen processing
-Proteosome specificity and immuno-proteosomes
- Effect of the T cell repertoire on dominance
- Effects of pathogens on the immune response

Jeffrey A. Frelinger received his Ph.D. in immunology at the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena in 1973 and worked as a post-doc at the University of Michigan Medical School, Ann Arbor. Since 1988 he is professor and chair at the Department of Microbiology and Immunology and Associate Director for Research at the Center for Infectious Disease at the University of North Carolina, School of Medicine, Chapel Hill, USA. His major research interests are immunogenetics, molecular immunology and cellular immunology.
