Susanna Centlivre (c. 1667–1723) was a British poet, actor, and one of the leading female playwrights of the eighteenth century. Born around 1667, her early life is somewhat shrouded in mystery, and her maiden name is still the subject of debate. Centlivre's robust career in literature emerged despite the era's societal constraints on women. She was married three times, with her third husband being Joseph Centlivre, a yeoman of the mouth to Queen Anne, whose surname she retained for her professional identity. Her playwriting career began in earnest in the early 1700s, and she quickly became known for her comedic talent. Among her numerous plays, 'The Gamester' (1705) stands out as a pivotal work that showcased her satirical prowess and ability to write complex characters within the Restoration comedy tradition.
