Pollen, the plant structure most widely used by humans, is a key structure in plant reproduction giving rise to fruits and seeds. Moreover, the biotechnological use of pollen is of great importance for plant breeders since it allows to obtain varieties with better utilization and yield. In the first part, the successive steps of pollen development in the anther from floral induction to pollen germination and fertilization are thoroughly examined; the second part is devoted to pollen behaviour in vitro.

1 Types of pollen dispersal units and pollen competition.- 2 What may be the significance of polysiphony in Lavatera arborea?.- 3 Sexual dimorphism and stamen development in the dioecious white campion.- 4 Polyamines as markers in sexual reproduction of kiwifruit.- 5 Protein targeting by ubiquitin during anther and pollen development in male and female flowers of kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa).- 6 Mechanisms of Angiosperm anther dehiscence, a historical review.- 7 Anther carbohydrates during in vivo and in vitro pollen development.- 8 Expresión of oleosin genes in the olive (Olea europaea L.) anther.- 9 Possible mechanisms of the "447" Cytoplasmic Male Sterility in Vicia faba, an unconventional CMS associated with a double-stranded RNA replicon.- 10 The location of the pollen-specific NTP303 protein.- 11 The special callose wall: a new insight.- 12 Characterization of P26, a putative PLIM-1 partner in the pollen grain of Helianthus annuus.- 13 Functional studies of PLIM-1, a pollen-specific protein.- 14 Pollen coat signals and ovule penetration in Gasteria verrucosa (Mill.) H. Duval.- 15 Pollen tubes: cellular organization and control of growth.- 16 In vitro selection for heat-tolerance in Lilies.- 17 Monitoring sporophytic development of individual microspores of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.).- 18 Effects of ABA during the pretreatment of barley anthers on androgenesis of Hordeum vulgare L. cultivars Igri and Digger.- 19 Programmed cell death during androgenesis in Hordeum vulgare L..- 20 Androgenesis and albinism in Poaceae: influence of genotype and carbohydrates.- 21 Green and albino plant regeneration in anther culture of alloplasmic wheat lines.- 22 Assessment of green regenerants from rye and triticale anther cultures.- 23 Development and use of microsporeculture applied to vegetable Brassica oleracea breeding.
