Schools and Society, Third Edition is a comprehensive, integrated overview of Sociology of Education geared toward upper-level undergraduate courses in Sociology of Education, Foundations of Education, Social Contexts of Education or related courses taught in Sociology or Education departments. It may be used as a text by itself or as a supplement to another text. The book includes original readings and article excerpts by leaders in field and includes theory, methods, classical and current issues By organizing the book around a theme--the open systems approach--the articles are integrated to give a holistic view of educational systems. The articles are tied together by introductions to each part in the system. Articles have been selected based on the following criteria: 1.) Articles that illustrate a broad range of theoretical perspectives, major concepts, and current issues. 2.) Articles that provide a level of reading and sophistication appropriate to upper-level students. 3.) Articles from a wide range of respected sources. 4.) Inclusion of both classic and contemporary sociologists' work in order to provide an excellent balance.
Joan Z. Spade is Professor and Chair of Sociology at the State University of New York College at Brockport. She received her PhD from State University of New York at Buffalo and her B.A. from State university of New York at Geneseo. In addition to gender, Joan teaches courses on education, family, research methods, and statistics. She has published articles on gender, including rape. She also has co-edited two books in education. Joan is active in Sociologists for Women and Society, the Eastern Sociological Society, and the American Sociological Association. Through Jeanne Ballantine's involvement in the American Sociological Association (ASA) Teaching Projects and as Director of the ASA Teaching Services Field Program (now Departmental Resources Group), she has studied the teaching process, the introductory course, and effective ways of teaching the course. She has produced written materials, contributed to the ASA introductory survey and syllabi set, conducted teaching workshops, trained and advised TA's, directed the Teaching Information Exchange (nationwide network for sociology instructors), held elected offices including chair of the ASA Section on Teaching and Learning in Sociology (2 times), ASA Section on Sociology of Education, and chair of the ASA Teaching Committee. In 2010, she was the recipient of the J. Milton Yinger Award for a Distinguished Career in Sociology.
