Chapter 1
My Journey into Glam
Discovering the Power of Style
Have you ever wondered what all powerful, successful women have in common? Boss Glam lets you in on the secret of dressing for power and workplace success, and provides the insight and education needed to help you create your own personal style, and build the self-confidence needed for career progression.
I have always been passionate about makeup and style, and have worked within the sector for many years. Boss Glam can help any woman develop the self-confidence needed within the male-dominated workplace. Setting up a regular morning ritual and makeup routine doesn’t need to take a great deal of time. With my help, you’ll learn exactly what look suits your face and figure, and you will quickly adapt to applying the makeup, wardrobe, and hairstyling techniques needed to create your perfect look.
The techniques and guides offered in Boss Glam are also ideal for any woman who has been through traumatic medical or mental conditions, and wants to begin building her life back with confidence through beauty. Even if you’ve suffered the most serious, life-threatening illness, there are times when you need to get out and face the world. I provide the grooming tips to help you create a look that will help you build back your confidence levels, and win admiration from your friends and acquaintances. The power of makeup and styling cannot be denied, and can help create the look of wellbeing that may have been missing from your life for a while.
If you struggle to find time for all your essential self-care routines, Boss Glam cuts through all the time-consuming details, and teaches you how to create a simple look using professional makeup, wardrobe, and hair styling techniques that will save you a lot of money too. You’ll also learn about essential skin care routines, packing tips when travelling for business, and how you can effortlessly move your style from workday professionalism to social evening glam, without taking too much time or trouble.
Boss Glam will also inspire you to consider makeup as an art form, to create and transform yourself into any image you envision, and to use color therapy to enhance moods and create fun and excitement in your life. It will help you appreciate makeup as a conduit for creating personal space and time away from the hustle and bustle of life around you. Applying makeup can be meditational too, helping you to focus on the present moment, and teaching you to let go and indulge in some beauty therapy just for yourself. It has the power that allows you to connect with yourself on a deeper level despite it being viewed as part of a shallow industry.
I hope you find the insider tips, guidelines, and tutorials useful, which are found on the book website, www.bossglambook.com, and that you can see just how quick and easy it is to create a powerful, polished appearance every day.
Corporate Glam
I know that grooming for work every day can be costly for most women. Buying cosmetics and getting your hair and nails done on a regular basis can add up and become very expensive. An interesting study1 showed how one woman discovered that she spends 15 times more than her husband on personal grooming products and services annually. Another, a high profile founder and CEO of a start-up, felt the pressure to present herself in the best way she could when pitching to raise capital with investors. The disparities in annual grooming expenses between men and women, and how they are treated based on their appearances in business, is astonishing. While this woman in my example had to spend lots of money to look the part of a high-class CEO of her company, her male business partner didn’t seem to have the same kind of pressure to dress up to be taken seriously during their business meetings. Though this man was able to pull off the casual look in a professional setting, for any man reading this, please don't follow his example because dressing up for work is just as important for you too.
Before I moved to the US, in 2010, I was spending thousands of dollars a year on grooming and keeping up with trends in fashion and makeup. As a student on a budget, I had to save money and couldn’t possibly splurge on things like when I was in Dubai. I ended up teaching myself how to do my own hair, makeup, and nails, and I am so grateful that I did. I wasn’t buying designer labels, but I did have the eye to find dupes for a fraction of their cost, from high street fashion brands and online stores. Learning the Boss Glam techniques that I am sharing with you in this book can help you to save money, and empower you to take charge of your own beauty routine and personal style without breaking your bank.
When I started working after college, getting ready for work always excited me. I was always imagining what outfit I should wear, and how I should do my hair and makeup that would give me the most confidence to start my day at the office. But my imagination and my reality wasn’t always matched. It took a while before I learned the art of corporate glam. And yes, I say art, because knowing the fine line between too little and too much grooming (or “being extra” is a better expression for it) makes the difference in how people perceive you at work, and how powerful and confident you feel about yourself while progressing in your career.
I loved observing what people wore at work. Seeing how they dressed and presented themselves said so much about them. Writing a book that would help present an opportunity for current and future leaders to experience how amazing and empowering it can feel to dress up, and how impactful their exceptional style and appearance could be to their communication, was something that just had to be done. My mission with Boss Glam is to help readers revamp their corporate image to be more professional and polished, while empowering them to put their best dressed self forward in life, every day.
I decided to choose corporate glam as my niche because I realized that women in the corporate world are the ones with the least time and the most stress when getting ready for work, particularly working moms. When I realized that there were a lot of women struggling with this very concept, I knew I wanted to help empower them via a book; hence, this is why I wrote Boss Glam.
People really treat you differently when you care about how you present yourself in public. They respect you more when you dress up than when you don’t make any effort. Dressing up shows self-respect, and it tells the world around you that you respect them too, while holding yourself to a certain standard that elevates your confidence and credibility.
I’ve tried to make style and makeup in this book easy to follow and enjoyable. I created makeup tutorials as a bonus on the book website, www.BossGlamBook.com, to empower women with lessons they can practice, and to save them time when getting ready. I cover a lot in this book, so what you choose to take away from it is up to you.
What I find truly important is how you incorporate the information I’ve provided, and find that sweet spot between comfortable and presentable. Each individual piece of advice can be used as a consulted reference when finding your own personal style.
Once you discover the power of transformation, I hope that you can appreciate how it can positively affect your self-confidence and, ultimately, your communication with others in the workplace. Boss Glam can empower you to do more in life, with elegance and style.
You don’t need to spend hours applying makeup to look polished, fresh, and awake; although I must admit, for some of us, an average of five minutes could be all we need. If you think it takes longer to get ready, and it all seems way too overwhelming to even bother, I say just pick your battles in what needs the most attention, and don’t worry about the rest.
We may not like adding a lot, but we certainly can do the minimum to conceal, hydrate, and polish up a little here and there—wouldn’t you agree?
In the next section, I show you how to make the most of your time getting ready for work in the mornings, without the worry and stress of being late; and more importantly, how to avoid having to do your makeup in the car or in the bathroom at work.
Time Crunch
Let’s be honest; how much time do you really have to get ready for anything in the mornings, much less for work? Are you one of those women who throws a bunch of makeup in her bag and does her makeup while stuck in traffic on her way to work? I used to be her too. For the longest time, between hitting the snooze button at least four times, working out, showering, having breakfast, and rushing out of the house, I never had time to apply decent makeup for work, till I discovered a fast and efficient way to do it.
Ladies, if you don’t even have five minutes to get ready, please just avoid makeup altogether. I would rather see a woman’s face in all her natural glory than to see her apply makeup badly. You think you’re polishing up and pulling yourself together...
