Presents a selection of 30 passages from Buddhists works in Chinese, including native Chinese and Japanese writings on Buddhism, mainly from the Sui and Tang periods, selected to illustrate Buddhist doctrines of interest to the Chinese.

Students of Buddhism must be equipped with at least one of the Buddhist canonical languages: Pali, Sanskrit, Tibetan or Chinese. This book comprises two main parts, a grammar and a reader. A fifth of the book deals with Chinese grammar, together with information concerning the writing of Chinese and the use of dictionaries and other reference works.
