In this new addition to the very popular 'Straight Talking Introductions' series, two experienced psychotherapists provide a simple, factual, objective explanation of what you get when you seek therapy. Based on the latest research, this book tells you what works (and doesn't work), how it works, what you should look for from therapy and your therapist, and what to do if it isn't helping. With more than 500 different types of talking therapy on offer, mostly provided in the private sector, it can be a bewildering experience trying to find what will best help you with your problems. But therapy does work, and this essential guide will help you get the most from what it offers.

Matt Wotton and Graham Johnston worked for two decades at the centre of government on some of the most complex problems facing the country, shaping decisions that affected millions of people. In the last decade, they left government, retrained as psychotherapists, and set up the London Centre for Applied Psychology, which provides evidence-based training to mental health professionals and consults to business on mental health and wellbeing at work. Matt is a former Chair of the Bowlby Centre. He has been a member of the Prison & Probation Board, studied at the London Business School and has an MBA from Warwick University. He contributes to the national press on relationship breakdown, managing mental health in sports and how therapy and psychological coaching impact high performance. Graham was Director of Policy at the Bowlby Centre. He has studied in the US and has an MBA from Imperial College, London. He writes and speaks on relationships and parenting in the 21st century, the challenges of midlife, and how therapy sits alongside developments in technology, A.I., psychedelics and psychiatric medication.
