'Who says that daughters cannot be heroic?' Once upon a time, history was written by men, for men and about men. Women were deemed less important, their letters destroyed, their stories ignored. Not any more. This is the story of women who went to war, women who stopped war and women who stayed at home. The rulers. The fighters. The activists. The writers. This is the story of Wu Zetian, who as 'Chinese Emperor' helped to spread Buddhism in China. This is the story of Genghis Khan's powerful daughters, who ruled his empire for him. This is the story of Christine de Pizan, one of the earliest feminist writers. This is the story of Victoria Woodhull, who ran for president before she could even vote for one. This is the story of the world - with the women put back in.

KERSTIN LÜCKER and Ute Daenschel met while doing their PhDs in Berlin, where they worked together side by side every day, often swapping their essays with each other. This worked so well that they decided to write a book - and so A History of the World with the Women Put Back In was born.
We've all heard of Cleopatra and Lucrezia Borgia and Joan of Arc. What about those women who made history who we may not have ever heard of? The Chinese empress Wu Zetian, who helped spread Buddhism through China, the Byzantine empress Theodora, originally a circus artist, or Mathilde of Canossa, one of the most powerful women in the Middle Ages. We learn about these women and more, from the Suffragettes and Ada Lovelace through to Margaret Hamilton, who wrote the Apollo moon landing guidance software and was only recognised decades later. This book tells the history of the world - with a difference. It reminds us that throughout the ages there were generations of unsung women: their place in history, whether minor or major, has often been underplayed and forgotten. It's a book to read together with your children, or for intelligent adults to read for themselves to broaden their understanding of history and how we record and understand the events that happened around the world. It has the potential to become a classic.

Ruth Ahmedzai Kemp and Jessica West are freelance translators with a shared love of history; this is the third book they've co-translated from German. Natsko Seki studied illustration at the University of Brighton. She draws her inspiration from architecture and people from different ages and cultures.
