Chapter 2
GOD CREATED THE UNIVERSE AND HE CREATED YOU
Psalm 19:1
The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands.

What do you think of when you think of heaven? Do you think of a great big gate with angels standing guard at the entrance? Do you imagine Peter, the disciple, waiting inside the gate and asking, “Why should I let you in?” Do you envision a place of billowy clouds, high in the sky? Have you ever even considered heaven? If not, you must have searched the night skies for the moon or the constellations, or watched the glory of the setting sun? I have always thought that heaven is the place that I will go to when I die. I will live with God, and it is supposed to be a happy place where I will meet up with those who have gone there before me. As a nurse, I have listened to patients who would talk of deceased family members who had come to visit them just a few days before their death. Heaven is the place that most people think of when someone they love has left this world, even if they had never really considered it before. Heaven becomes a very real hope in times of loss. There is a verse in the Bible where Paul says he was caught up to the third heaven, and in Philippians he says that it is better to be away from the body and be in heaven.
I once heard a story about someone who went to heaven and was welcomed by an angel who gave the new arrival a tour. During the tour, they came upon a large vault-like structure with locked drawers and cabinets. The person asked the angel what the drawers and doors were for. The angel responded that they were filled with all the wonderful plans, hopes and dreams that had been waiting to be given to the people on earth, but the things within the drawers had never been claimed or asked for. Many people had desires, dreams and aspirations that were never fulfilled in their lives. They had never stepped out in courage and faith to claim the achievements and things that were still within the drawers. This is a powerful allegory, indicating that there is so much that is still unattained here on earth. Imagine so many dreams left unfulfilled, possessions unclaimed, hopes deferred and actions never taken.
God exhorts us to open our mouth wide and he will fill it. (Psalm 81:10) We do not expect greatness from God or even from ourselves. We do not think of a God who longs to be gracious to us and waits for us to act upon our dreams. The Scriptures also say, “You do not have because you do not ask God.” (James 4:2) Jim Rohn wrote, “The worst thing one can do is not to try, to be aware of what one wants and not give in to it, to spend years in silent hurt wondering if something could have materialized - never knowing.”
God is a giving God, and He said in John 10:10 that Jesus came so that we would have life and have it abundantly. Abundance means no lack and also an overflowing supply. It embodies affluence and bountifulness. When I think of abundance, the question I ask is why is there so much lack, toil and trouble for so many people in the world? We see in the story above that God has so much waiting for people but, for some reason, the majority do not seem to be able to access the gifts that await them in heaven and bring them to earth.
This is a very perplexing situation. I have always wondered why some people become vastly wealthy, but the majority stay stuck, getting by on a limited supply, without any thought of abundance. They are always thinking of having “just enough”, the next paycheque or the next bill payment. Is this why you were created—just to survive and not to thrive—just to be blessed and not to become a blessing? It remains baffling, but there is so much more each of us could accomplish if we only believed, had faith, and went the extra mile with determination. In regard to the very poor, God admonishes that to the person who has been given much, much is required. I believe the intention of this exhortation is for all of us to do something, no matter how small, to help the very poor and the weak. God says he will reward those who give to the poor.
Proverbs 19:17
Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward them for what they have done.
I had a very unique experience, years ago, at a weekend retreat entitled, “The Holy Spirit Weekend”. It was a great weekend getaway. My husband and I stayed at a campground and had all of our meals prepared for us. Our mornings and evenings were spent learning about the things of the Holy Spirit. As we were praising the Lord, I felt like I was swept up into the Spirit. In the presence of the Spirit, I began to see picture after picture of the plight of women around the world. I saw visions of women kept under the control of their husbands, sons or another male figure in their lives. Windows were painted black, and the women were imprisoned in their own homes and not allowed out, or even allowed to see out. I saw brothels where young girls were sold over and over, and so much suffering from abuse and a lack of love or protection. I saw women who were taken from their families to become slaves, and girls who were married off much too young. During this experience, I felt the most incredible sense of love surrounding me. It was tender and gentle. The only words to describe it were pure and exquisite love. It was the very essence of perfect love. Remember, God is love.
1 John 4:16
And so we know and rely on the love God has for us.
God is love.
As I saw each picture before the eye of my mind, soft tears streamed down my face. I was experiencing the deep sadness that came from the broken heart of God. He was sharing with me His grief. As I was deep in reverie about all that I was feeling and seeing, someone tapped me on the shoulder and the visions stopped. Our inhumanity towards one another causes God so much pain; it grieves Him.
Genesis 6:5-6 (NASB)
Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6 The Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart.
When the visions ceased, I became aware once more of the present. The teaching was still going on. I felt like I had left a very safe and protected place. Somehow everything seemed garishly bright, loud and harsh. Oh, how I longed to be back in the presence of the Spirit of the Lord, but the visitation had lifted. I wanted to hold on to the sense of God for as long as I could. I was aware that I had been touched in some way, and a remnant of that mighty Spirit of love was still upon me. The presence was so tender and so easily wounded by complaints, judgments or unkind words. It was such a positive force field of LOVE that I could almost feel it recoil from our judgmental and complaining ways. The Spirit of love wants to uplift, bless and care without any negative force being sent its way. The presence lingered for a while but finally waned out of reach. This experience has stayed fresh in my memory for decades now.
When I think of heaven, I think of the mighty heart of the Lord that will permeate the atmosphere and surround us with His great, kind, gentle, all-consuming love. Trust me; if God is perfect love, you will not be disappointed. During my time as a nurse, I met a couple of patients who had near death experiences and had been face to face with the light of the Lord. They felt such a mighty peace that, when it came time to leave this world, they were expectant and without fear. They were truly embraced in the words of the carpenter’s son: “I leave you my peace.” in John 14:21. In all the years of my faith in God, I thought only of our lives as lived here on earth, and that one day I would die and go to heaven. My understanding of faith considered only this earth, heaven and hades. One day, all of that simple, limited faith changed, when I viewed a picture of the universe beside a picture of the human brain cell. They were virtually identical. It was sometime later that a verse in Hebrews took on greater meaning. I had never thought of God in relation to the immensity of the universe. And Hebrews clearly states that it is God who created the universe.
Hebrews 1:1-2
In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe.
The first time I saw this picture of a brain cell, side by side with a picture of the universe, as it went through the news feed on Facebook, I was struck by how much they mirrored each other. They virtually looked like carbon copies of each other. I stopped and wondered how this must be significant and silently asked the Lord what the significance was. I found the mirror images of the brain cell and the universe thought-provoking. Then one day I read:
Ephesians 4:10
He who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe.
My heart leaped when I read these words with the realization that the Spirit of the loving God, whom I knew from the ancient Scriptures, filled the whole universe. I was God-smacked and incredible joy filled me as my heart raced. I thought of the verses that said there was nowhere God was not present....
