A travel diary giving an account of a journey across America, from Boston to San Francisco and back, on the legendary Green Tortoise bus. Beneath the descriptions of the people and places encountered on the way, lies the tale of the interlocking relationships between most of the multinational inhabitants of the bus. The common factor on both trips is Rob, a writer from Boston who is popular with women and always has a good story to tell. Among the women at Rob's side are Jill - "a small warm Geordie" and Tania "a Ukranian-Chinese-American xenophobe". The male contingent includes several Germans - the confusingly-named Yerk, Mork, Rick and Dirk, plus the "nervous and uncoordinated" Olaf - and assorted Hungarians, Scots and Australians. The reader also meets some beach elk, a blind alligator, a mad scientist and an evangelistic Alaskan.
