In this work the author recounts his travels in and around Florida. Florida is a place where people come to reinvent their lives, escape from the past, themselves and reality. The book tells tales of tragedy and survival, exploring where Florida is now and where it might be headed.

In the 1990s, from the perspective of almost anywhere else in the world, Florida resembles nothing so much as the Planet Mars itself. A swamp turned into a mindless paradise, a lure for tourists, spacemen and exiles, a state increasingly racked by racial tension and random gang violence, this is a place unlike any other. This work explores the extremes of Florida, the place where people come to reinvent their lives, escape from the past, themselves and reality. It weaves personal stories with tales of tragedy, survival and transformation exploring where Florida is now and where it, and many of us, might be headed.
