Delivers the coverage of the legal implications and ramifications of doing business internationally, along with the related cultural, political, economic, and ethical issues faced by global business managers.
Today most people agree that no business is purely domestic and that even the smallest local firms are affected by global competition and world events. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS AND ITS LEGAL ENVIRONMENT is designed to deliver comprehensive, yet accessible, coverage of the legal implications and ramifications of doing business internationally, along with the related cultural, political, economic, and ethical issues faced by global business managers. Focusing on trade, the licensing of intellectual property, and foreign direct investment, the authors present the three major forms of doing business in a foreign country through real-world examples, precedent-setting cases, managerial implications, and ethical considerations. From the legal relationship between parties in an international business transaction to managing risk to learning the special challenges of doing business in emerging economies, the 9th Edition helps students understand the most common practices and critical issues in global business law.

Richard Schaffer is professor emeritus of business law (retired) in the finance department at Walker College of Business, Appalachian State University. He has taught business law, international business law and transactions, and the law of international trade and investment. Professor Schaffer received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Mississippi and his LL.M. degree from New York University. From 1976 through 1982 he assisted United Nations agencies in New York, San Jose and Vienna, with projects examining the relationship between corrupt practices, the abuse of power, and socio-economic development, and he served as rapporteur of UN working groups on international economic crime. Schaffer was Director of International Business Studies at ASU and the founder of its international business and business study abroad programs. In the 1980s he consulted and spoke frequently as an advocate for the internationalization of the business school curriculum. It was during the University of San Diego School of Laws Institute on International and Comparative Law, Paris, 1982, that the original concept for this book was outlined and draft materials first developed. Since his retirement from teaching, he has worked in the international home textile industry on global sourcing, customs and trade matters. Filiberto Agusti was a partner in the international law firm of Steptoe & Johnson, LLP, where he practiced law for over 45 years. He represented governments, multinational corporations, manufacturers and investors in international arbitrations, courtroom litigation and transactional negotiations. His work involved many multinational disputes concerning intellectual property issues, antitrust/competition law, international infrastructure contract disputes, cross-border corporate acquisitions and governance, international joint ventures, and bankruptcy reorganizations. Mr. Agusti has authored articles for the Harvard Law Review and other legal publications, is a frequent speaker at professional seminars around the world, and regularly comments on legal issues on camera for Univisin, Telemundo and CNN en Espaol. Before commencing his practice at Steptoe, Mr. Agusti was a law clerk on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and received his law degree from Harvard Law School, where he was a senior editor of the Harvard Law Review. Lucien J.
