Pili in Mycobacterium Tuberculosis: Structure, Function, and Therapeutic Advances discusses the types of pili produced by the tuberculosis-causing bacterium, Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB). The book examines the structure of pili shown under electron and atomic force microscopy and, by using whole genome sequencing, outlines the importance of pili in MTB. It also explores the role of pili in bacteria–host interactions and in drug development and delivery.

The book provides an overview of the structure, synthesis, and function of pili in bacteria. This includes taxonomy and the role of pili in diseases. It also examines the structure of pili and the preparation of MTB for electronic and atomic microscopy. It explores the various life cycles of pili, the susceptibility patterns of MTB, the differences of pili formation in MTB, and their role in increase surveillance. It goes on to discuss the expression and function of pili using whole genome sequencing and PCR-based methods and delves into bacteria–host interactions. Lastly, it explores the development of new drugs and their therapeutic delivery by pili.

Dr. Ali Akbar Velayati is the Director of the National Research Institute of Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases (NRITLD) at the Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences. He is a Full Professor of Pediatric Infectious Diseases, and he has guided more than 300 MD and PhD students. He is also the Head of Mycobacteriology Research Center (MRC) in NRITLD, where he directly monitors the basic and clinical trial on tuberculosis. Dr. Velayati is the President of the Asian African Society of Mycobacteriology and of the Society of Biomedical and Biotechnology Scientists. He is the Chief Editor of the International Journal of Mycobacteriology, the Journal of Preventive, Diagnostic and Treatment Strategies in Medicine, and the Biomedical and Biotechnology Research Journal. Dr. Parissa Farnia is the Director of the Iranian National Reference Tuberculosis Laboratory (INRT) at the Mycobacteriology Research Center (MRC) in the National Research Institute of Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (NRITLD). Her expertise and research interests include mycobacteriology, infectious diseases, and tuberculosis. She has published in multiple international journals such as Journal of Clinical Microbiology, Chest, Clinical infectious Diseases, and the International Journal of Tuberculosis and Lung Disease and serves on several editorial boards including International Journal of Mycobacteriology, the Journal of Preventive, Diagnostic and Treatment Strategies in Medicine, and the Biomedical and Biotechnology Research Journal.
