This book reviews various modified gravity models, including those with modifications in the pure gravitational sector; those involving extra fields, that is, scalar-tensor and vector-tensor gravity theories; gravity models with Lorentz symmetry breaking; and nonlocal gravity models. The authors discuss both classical and quantum aspects of these theories. The book is unique in bringing together all the current alternatives to Einstein gravity in one source and serves as an excellent starting point for graduate students and other newcomers seeking an overview.

Albert Petrov holds a Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics (1997, Tomsk, Russia) and is currently a Professor at the Federal University of Paraiba (Joao Pessoa, Brazil). He chiefly works in the areas of quantum field theory and gravity and has more than 100 papers in international scientific journals to his credit. His main research interests are in supersymmetry, Lorentz symmetry breaking and modified gravity.

Einstein gravity and the need for its modification.-  Modifications of the pure gravitational sector.- Scalar-tensor gravities.- Vector-tensor gravities.- Horava-Lifshitz gravity.- Nonlocal gravity.- Summary.

"The main interest of this brief book lies in the search of a theory of gravity that is consistent from the quantum point of view. If this is the physics that the reader is interested in, this book will be useful as an entry point, especially for graduate students and researchers from other fields looking for an introduction before delving into the vast literature." (Valerio Faraoni, Mathematical Reviews, April, 2022)
"All the models presented in the book are analyzed in detail, showing their strengths and weaknesses, in particular the causal coherence of the theory (analyzing the Goedel-like solutions) and the possible consistence with quantum theory (renormalizability). This book gives a good guidance for those scientists who want to face the field of alternative theories of gravity." (Daniele Montanino, zbMATH 1470.83004, 2021)
