This work of reference, comprising over 50 chapters is being published in three volumes. The objective is to present the underlying scientific foundation of the multi-disciplinary field of crystal growth. The handbook is a comprehensive compendium on crystal growth, documenting authoritatively in one publication the fundamentals of the subject. As such, it is a work which should find its way into the libraries of industrial companies engaged in crystal growth and/or epitaxy and of academic or industrial research laboratories studying crystal growth processes in whatever materials. It should also serve as a source book for graduate and post-graduate teaching in the field. Volume 1 addresses the underlying scientific principles relevant to all the techniques of crystal growth. Following a historical introduction, the first part contains eight chapters devoted to thermodynamic, kinetic and crystallographic aspects, including computer simulation by molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo methods.
The second part, comprising a further seven chapters, is devoted to bulk transport effects and the influence of transport-limited growth on the stability of both isolated growth forms (such as the dendrite) and arrays, and on the cooperative effects which lead to pattern formation.
Part 1 Thermodynamics and kinetics: historical introduction; phase equilibria, R.F. Brebrick; defect thermodynamics and phase diagrams in compound crystal growth processes, H. Wenzl et al; nucleation theory, B. Mutaftschiev; the structure of supersaturated solutions, A.S. Myerson and A.F. Izmailov; crystal growth mechanisms, J.P. van der Eerden; growth and morphology of crystals - integration of theories of roughening and Harman Perdok theory, P. Bennema; atomic-scale models of crystal growth, G.H. Gilmer; low-energy ion-surface interactions during crystal growth from the vapour phase - effects on nucleation and growth, defect creation and annihilation, microstructure evolution and synthesis of metastable phases, C.E. Greene. Part 2 Transport processes and stability: description of transport processes, A.A. Wheeler; fluid mechanics of crystallization from solution, H. Huppert; morphological stability, S.R. Coliell and G.B. McFadden; effects of flow on morphological stability, S.H. Davis; pattern formation in crystal growth, B. Billia and R. Trivedi; the dendrite, M.E. Glicksman and S.P. Marsh; kinetics of electrocystallization, P. Ramasamy.
