This advanced-level textbook describes the microbial processes found in ground-water systems from the perspective of their effect on water chemistry and quality.

About the author FRANCIS H. CHAPELLE is a Research Hydrologist for the U.S. Geological Survey in Columbia, South Carolina. He has been the team leader for the USGS Microbial Studies Group in the South Carolina District for the past eight years. He has been active in the movement to establish a firm, scientific basis for applying bioremediation strategies to contaminated ground-water systems, including serving on the National Research Council panel on in situ bioremediation, and serves as a technical reviewer for the journals Ground Water, Water Resources Research, Environmental Science and Technology, and Geology. Dr. Chapelle received the USGS Superior Service Award in 1988 for his original research in subsurface microbiology. He received his PhD in geochemistry/geology from the George Washington University in 1984.
