Stem cells have ushered in widespread interest and exciting possibilities for cell based therapies. Despite multiple initiatives and meticulous untiring efforts, translating this bench side research into bedside practice and therapies remains a challenge. A better understanding of expanding research in specific areas of stem cells is crucial in developing regenerative medical therapeutics. With their unique attributes, studies on stem cells of endometrium and its therapeutic applications at both in-vitro and at pre-clinical settings in health and disease states are gaining consensus in recent years. This SpringerBrief provides a thorough but succinct presentation of solid information about the significance of stem cells from the endometrium, the inner lining of the uterus. It presents an understanding of stem cells derived from human endometrium and examine how cells from these sources are being used to research and therapeutics for various clinical problems and diseases. In addition, brief also discusses the threats and challenges facing endometrium. Overall, it illuminates the hope that, the stem cells of endometrium can be an effective source of therapeutics for a multitude of disorders.


Dr. Indumathi Somasundaram is a Assistant Professor at Department of Stem cell and Regenerative Medicine, D.Y. Patil Univeristy, Maharashtra. She completed her master's degree in 2008 from University of Madras (Loyola College, Chennai, India). After a brief work experience at Lifeline RIGID Hospitals as a Researcher for nearly 2 years, where she got introduced to stem cells, she proceeded to do PhD in stem cells, and awarded PhD from University of Madras in the year 2014. During her work and PhD, she gained research experience on different kinds of adult stem cells including bone marrow, adipose tissue and endometrium, its in-vitro attributes of self renewal and differentiation, and its therapeutic implications/applications. Her areas of interest and expertise include adult stem cells, regenerative biology, reproductive biology, diabetes, cancer stem cells and so on. She has more than 21 publications, of which 15 are indexed and 4 book chapters (Springer Verlag) to her credit and few more in pipeline. Her present interest and work lies on exploring the potentials of mesenchymal stem cells in treating diabetes and on identifying the possible causes and cues of endometrial disorders and its management. Besides, she is exploring microRNA regulatory mechanisms in physiology and pathology of diseases.
