This text aims to provide a solid treatment of the subject, in an easily digestible form. The 23 chapters cover structure, function, and metabolism of the cell; cell membrane transport; chemical messengers and the endocrine system; nerve cells and electrical signalling; and more.
This carefully developed new text addresses the key challenges that instructors face in teaching students with varied backgrounds and learning styles. The authors incorporate numerous integrative features—such as systems integration charts and an integrative exercise physiology chapter—to help students take what they learn on the cellular, chemical, organ, and system levels and apply it to the body as a whole. This technique weaves a relevant, concrete body systems integration theme throughout the book, helping students to build on their knowledge.

William J. Germann studied chemistry as an undergraduate at Kenyon College and went on to earn a Ph.D. in physiology at the University of Michigan. Among other biology courses, Bill currently teaches three undergraduate human physiology courses at the University of Dallas in Irving, Texas. Part of his work at the University consists of advising pre-medical students. Bill was recently appointed chair of the Biology Department. He is a member of the Biophysical Society, the American Association of University Professors, and the Texas Association of Advisors for Health Professions. Cindy L. Stanfield earned both a B.S. and a Ph.D. in Physiology at the University of California at Davis. She teaches physiology to undergraduates at the University of South Alabama, where she has published numerous papers in neurophysiology. Cindy is a member of the Society for Neuroscience, the International Association for the Study of Pain, the American Pain Society, Sigma Xi, and the Golden Key Honor Society.
