Suzanne Noble is the Director of the Birmingham School of Dental Hygiene and Therapy. Having qualified from Birmingham University in 1980, she obtained the MFGDP in 1992 and MDentSci in 1995. She has 25 years’ experience teaching dental hygienists and 8 years teaching dental therapists. She is a fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She has lectured widely as the team approach to Management of Oral Disease and has co-developed a postgraduate training programme for dental hygienists and therapists in the West Midlands.

Sheila Phillips is Principal Dental Therapy and Dental Hygiene Lecturer at the Dental Academy, University of Portsmouth. Sheila Phillips qualified as a dental therapist in 1981 and a dental hygienist in 1982. For the last 19 years she has been involved in the education and training of dental hygienists and dental therapists. She is a member of the Higher Education Academy.

Henk S. Brand studied biology at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam. He was awarded his Master’s degree in 1986 and his PhD in 1990. He is Assistant Professor at the Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA), with a research interest in the relation between systemic diseases and oral health. He lectures to both undergraduate and postgraduate students and has published over 90 research papers. He is editor of the international textbook Local Anaesthesia in Dentistry and a Dutch textbook for dental students, General Pathology for Dentists.
Arjan Vissink DDS, MD, PhD

Arjan Vissink graduated as a dentist at the University of Groningen, the Netherlands. In 1985, he defended his PhD thesis entitled ‘Xerostomia. Development, properties and application of a mucin-containing saliva substitute’. Between 1987 and 1992 he was a fellow of the Dutch Royal Academy of Sciences. During this period he studied the mechanism and the prevention of irradiation-damage to salivary gland tissue. Thereafter, he became a resident in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Since 1996 he is employed as an oral and maxillofacial surgeon at the University Medical Center Groningen. In 1999 he graduated as a physician. In 2003 he was appointed as a professor in Oral Medicine at the University of Groningen. His research focuses on oral medicine (in particular the relation between systemic diseases and oral health), reconstructive preprosthetic surgery and implant dentistry. Arjan Vissink has (co)authored many scientific publications and books.

Paula Farthing has extensive experience of undergraduate education for both dental hygiene and therapy students including curriculum innovation, development and implementation. She is a member of the Teachers Group of the British Society for Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, a member of the Higher Education Academy and Director of Learning and Teaching in Sheffield. Her research interests lie in the area of mucosal immunology and include the diagnosis and pathogenesis of mucosal disease.

After qualifying from Guy’s Dental School in 1993, Professor Avijit Banerjee currently holds a chair in Cariology & Operative Dentistry and Hon. Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at the King’s College London Dental Institute, King’s Health Partners, London. He also holds a visiting Chair in Restorative Dentistry at the Oman Dental College as well as being a specialist practitioner in Restorative Dentistry, Periodontics and Prosthodontics in the UK. He is the primary author of the definitive text in his specialist area, Pickard’s Manual of Operative Dentistry (9th edn, Oxford University Press) and is an internationally renowned researcher, lecturer and teacher in the subjects of caries, minimal intervention dentistry and adhesive dental materials.

Naveen graduated from The Victoria University of Manchester in 2004. Having completed Vocational training on the Bedford scheme, he went on to work as an associate in general practice after which he completed a series of senior house officer jobs in Restorative dentistry, Periodontics, Prosthetics and Oral surgery. He obtained his membership of the faculty of dental surgery in 2006 and was appointed as a specialist registrar in Restorative dentistry at Birmingham in 2009, where he now works. He is an examiner for the MJDF examination and he is currently a council member for the British Society of Prosthodontics.

Philip Green qualified from the University of Liverpool in 1971. He was awarded the Fellowship in Dental Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons of Glasgow in 1980 and was accepted on to the General Dental Council’s Specialist List in Periodontics when it was established in 1998. He has taught in the Department of Restorative Dentistry at the University of Manchester Dental School where he also presents his ‘Effective Periodontics’ practical seminar programme for the Department of Postgraduate Dentistry. He has been engaged in full-time specialist periodontal practice since 1995 and has published many papers in a wide variety of dental magazines and journals.

Maggie Jackson qualified as a dental hygienist in 1960, having trained in the WRAF.
She is a passionate believer in continuing education and has obtained dental health education and adult education qualifications. In 2003 she was awarded a Master of Philosophy in Dentistry from Leeds University. Currently she is working in specialist periodontal practices in Manchester and Essex. She has been an invited speaker at many hygienists’ conferences, including being the first hygienist to lecture on Stafford Miller’s ‘Talking Points’ road show.

Mary O’Donnell qualified as a dental nurse in 1985 from the Dublin Dental University Hospital. She was appointed Senior Dental Nurse in 1990 and went on to take up the post of Dental Nurse Tutor at the Dublin Dental University Hospital in October 1992. She was awarded an MSc in applied microbiology with the Microbiology Research Unit at the Dublin Dental University Hospital in 2002. She was appointed Senior Experimental Officer with the Microbiology Research Unit in 2004 and was awarded a PhD in 2009. Her major research interests include the development of intelligent, automated and environmentally friendly methods of controlling microbial biofilms in dental unit waterlines and suction systems.
