About the Author
Yannis Kalfoglou, PhD, is a blockchain expert and practitioner with over 25 years' experience in technology, specialising in putting emerging technologies to work.
Dr Kalfoglou has 6 years of hands-on experience with commercial-scale blockchain across diverse industries, including buy-side in the capital markets, insurance, ecosystems' platforms, supply chain, and banking. He regularly appears at blockchain events as an invited speaker and panellist for thought leadership and positioning with regards to smart contract solutions, blockchain network ecosystem build up, and roadmapping with technology and vendor choices. He has led the blockchain efforts at a large global asset manager in the capital markets. He also pioneered proof-of-concept blockchain work in the smart contracting space for management fees, worked with post-trading reconciliation and settlement solutions using blockchain technology, and evangelized use cases of blockchain across all functions in institutional asset management.
Dr Kalfoglou has also been involved with and advised blockchain startups in the insurance space for parametric and automatic insurance pay-outs, in the banking space for fiat-to-crypto vertical integration for retail markets, in the data marketplace space for the use of AI technology to determine optimum demand/supply pricing, and in a number of ad-hoc engagements to advise clients on roadmapping and strategies for ICOs. Prior to his blockchain journey, Dr Kalfoglou was a leading researcher in Artificial Intelligence (AI). He is widely recognized as an early pioneer in semantic interoperability for heterogeneous systems' integration - a prerequisite for today's complex, mixed-structured digital ecosystems. He spent over 15 years researching, developing and deploying AI solutions.
Dr Kalfoglou holds a PhD in AI from the University of Edinburgh and a 1st class honours in Computer Science. He is an advisory board member for startups and a technology reviewer for EU sponsored programmes.
