"Atonement" is a politically themed play by the author and play wright Edward Thompson. It is set in British India during the days of Mahatma Gandhi's political agitation, in Durgapur, an up-country town in Bengal, and in a village near Durgapur. On a hot sweltering afternoon in April, a group of Englishmen and their wives gather for a chat. They discuss different subjects ranging from the economy, the weather and the Indian people. The discussion soon however turns to the subject of the honesty of the Christian servants churned out by the missionary societies of the Indian colonies. Consensus is that the workers have been showing less than exemplary character. That is until Gregory, the college principal of the Baptist Missionary College, chimes in. He thinks that the acts of petty theft are more to do with political reasons than moral ones…
