In 1939, at the age of six and just before the outbreak of the war, the author was uprooted and tossed into the political and military cauldron of South East Asia to face the turmoil of wartime in the Philippines - first on the run in the jungle from the invading Japanese, then in an internment camp where, still a child, he came close to death.
In 1939, at the age of six and just before the outbreak of World War Two, the author was uprooted from the Sussex countryside and tossed into the political and military cauldron of South East Asia to face the turmoil of wartime in the Philippines - first on the run in the jungle from the invading Japanese, then in an internment camp where, still a child, he came close to death. His mind further broadened by evacuation to the USA, he then fought a more personal battle for survival, this time against the stifling educational conventions of post-war Britain. Here, in this engrossing true-life account, Charles Land-Reeves unfolds a fascinating story ofchildhood innocence corrupted by and then triumphing over an uncompromising and often brutal reality. This second edition of a book first published in 1996 has been revised and corrected for its new appearance.

Born in London in 1933, Charles E. Land-Reeves has spent most of his life travelling worldwide. After completing his education in both the United States and England, and serving unwillingly in the United States Army, he had an international career in industry. In 1986 he returned to England to be close to his elderly parents. Charles E. Land-Reeves now lives in domestic bliss with his wife in the South of England. After a lifetime of stimulating international employment and travel, and an eventful private life that included five marriages, his pursuits are now recreational and leisurely. His hobbies and interests are varied and include travelling, gourmet cooking and entertaining. A sequel to this book, TheContinuing Passage, is in preparation; a further book, Francesca, on the ordeal his mother suffered at the hands of Japanese torturers, will appear in 2016.
