This master thesis provides an overview of the most important relevance of jazz musicians in their everyday life with regard to reproductive practice with live and studio recordings. The results confirm Ekkehard Jost's thesis that studio recordings are more used to produce a sustainable product and that live recordings are used for documentary. However, the motivational relevance exceeds these two purposes. Furthermore, a number of other relevances on this topic could be identified. For example, the relevance of room acoustics, sound technicians and the costs of a recording.
The topic was treated by using the relevance theory of Alfred Schütz, whose relevance types were used in the data collection as well as in the evaluation. The data was obtained with the help of expert interviews that were later transcribed and evaluated with the content analysis according to Glässer and Laudel. A total of 9 interviews were conducted with musicians who are active in the German-Swiss jazz scene and who had recording experience.
