Hugh Benham read Music and English at Southampton University, where he was awarded a PhD for his study of the music of John Taverner. He is an organist and is active in the Guild of Church Musicians and the Royal School of Church Music, having formerly taught in a sixth-form college, and worked as a chair of examiners for GCE Music.
