It also presents cutting-edge work on the psychological and evolutionary underpinnings of cultural stability and change. In all, more than 60 contributors have written over 30 chapters covering such diverse areas as food, love, religion, intelligence, language, attachment, narratives, and work.

Shinobu Kitayama, PhD, is Professor of Psychology and Director of the Culture and Cognition Program at the University of Michigan. He received his doctorate from the University of Michigan, where he has been teaching since 2003. Prior to joining the faculty there, Dr. Kitayama taught at the Universities of Oregon and Chicago and at Kyoto University. He is currently the Editor of the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin. Throughout his career Dr. Kitayama has studied cultural variations of self, emotion, and cognition, and has presented his work in the books Culture and Emotion: The Study of Mutual Influences (with Hazel Markus) and The Heart’s Eye: Emotional Influences in Perception and Attention, as well as in such leading journals as Psychological Review, Psychological Science, and the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. Dov Cohen, PhD, is Professor of Psychology at the University of Illinois. He received his doctorate from the University of Michigan and taught at the University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. His research interests relate to cultural continuity and change, within-culture variability, and the way people position themselves with respect to dominant cultural ideals. Dr. Cohen has conducted research on the cultural syndromes of honor, dignity, and face, as well as on cross-cultural similarities and differences in the experience of self. He coauthored the book Culture of Honor (with Richard Nisbett) and coedited Culture and Social Behavior (with Richard Sorrentino, James Olson, and Mark Zanna).
