This is a revised edition of a work offering accessible information on academic publishing for both new and established authors. Although generaly applicable, the book focuses on the North American publishing world. It describes how to choose a publisher, negotiate a contract and more.
Beth Luey explains how to choose a publisher for an academic book and how to approach one with a persuasive and well-planned proposal. Moving on past the major hurdle of acceptance, she introduces the reader to the clauses of the publishing contract and offers advice on how to negotiate with a publisher. She gives clear commonsense guidance on preparing the final manuscript, applying for permission to quote, and producing suitable artwork. A major section describes the use of floppy discs as electronic manuscripts. The author provides additional advice on revising and submitting the dissertation; writing and submitting journal articles; and planning, writing, and publishing the scholarly book. She also tells how to handle the practical and diplomatic demands of editing a multi-author volume or an anthology. She provides an introduction to the very different world of textbook writing. A concluding chapter on prices and costs will help authors to understand the business of publishing. New and experienced authors alike will find this book an invaluable guide. '... should be required reading for scholar/authors, or would-be authors ... her book is a lucid and valuable primer that renders a needed service to academic authors and publishers alike.'
