Provides comprehensive information and practical guidance on the effects of medical conditions on employment and working capability. This book covers many significant medical problems, including the employment potential and assessment of anyone with a disability. It also addresses many legal and ethical aspects.
First published in 1988, Fitness for Work has grown to become the UK 'bible' of occupational health and the Faculty of Occupational Medicine's flagship publication. This fourth edition reflects significant developments in legislation and guidelines, and changes in the information requirements of those working in the field. Demographic factors, such as an ageing population, and changes in work practice and social and political policy, mean the need for advice on the effects of medical conditions on employment and working capability is increasing. In keeping with previous editions, chapters are organized by medical condition, and co-authored by both a topic specialist and a specialist occupational physician. The reader will find practical guidance on the employment potential and assessment of anyone with an illness or disability. There is additional coverage of the ethical and legal aspects of ill health at work. There is an attempt to discuss and include, where possible, the evidence base and guidelines behind the findings.
This update also reflects recent government focus on a more holistic approach to health problems in employment, and initiatives to encourage people to stay at work and return to work, rather than supporting them at home. To an extent, occupational medicine must be tailored to individual patients under unique and specific circumstance. However, this book provides a wealth of useful consensus guidance, codes of practice, and locally evolved standards, to enable clinical judgements to be made. It is the most comprehensive text available on the effects of ill health on employment.

Keith Palmer has enjoyed many representational responsibilities, including Director of Continuing Professional Development at the Faculty of Occupational Medicine, Royal College of Physicians, UK. He is currently editor-in-chief of the BMJ publishing group 'Occupational and Environmental Medicine', chairman of the Research Working Group of the UK Industrial Injuries Advisory Council, and a member of the international advisory board of the Scandinavian Journal of Work, Environment and Health. Robin Cox has spent 40 years in occupational medicine, 30 of them in full time positions such as Medical Director, Phillips Petroleum Co Europe and Africa, CMO, CEGB and later National Power. More recently he was Occupational Physician to Prudential Insurance Company, Goldman Sachs, Wellcome Trust and a number of other major institutions. He is currently Chief Medical Officer of Active Health Partners. He was previously Chairman UK Diving Medical Advisory Committee (DMAC) and the European Committee for the Biological effects of Carbon Black (ECBECB), and has recently been involved with research into the health effects of mobile telephones. Dr Cox was previously Vice Dean of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine. Ian Palmer was appointed Chief Examiner to the Faculty of Occupational Medicine in 1995, serving for five years and introducing two new professinal post-graduate medical examinations. He also Chaired a number of Government advisory committees and was awarded an OBE in the recent New Years Honours for services to public health, especially food safety.
