THE CONTRIBUTORS


Helmut K. Anheier is professor of Sociology at the Hertie School in Berlin, Germany, and also a member of the faculty at UCLA’s Luskin School of Public Affairs. He served as president of the Hertie School from 2009 to 2018. His research centers on nonprofit organizations and philanthropy, social innovation, and organizational studies. He is the founding editor of the journals Global Perspectives, Journal of Civil Society, and Voluntas. He held a chair of Sociology at Heidelberg University and served as academic director of the Heidelberg Centre for Social Investment. He received his PhD from Yale University in 1986, was professor of Public Policy and Social Welfare at UCLA, Centennial Professor at the London School of Economics and Political Science, senior researcher at the Johns Hopkins University’s Institute for Policy Studies, and professor of Sociology at Rutgers University. An author of many publications, he has received various international awards for his scholarship. Before embarking on an academic career, he served as Social Affairs Officer at the United Nations.

Lehn M. Benjamin is an associate professor at the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. Her research focuses on nonprofit accountability and social impact where she examines how nonprofits work with the communities they serve to address inequality. Her award-winning research has been published in journals such as Nonprofit Voluntary Sector Quarterly, Nonprofit Management & Leadership, Voluntas, Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory, and The Russell Sage Foundation Journal of Social Sciences. She has held several leadership roles in the field, including serving on the board for the Association for Research on Nonprofit and Voluntary Action, as the co-editor of the Springer book series on Nonprofits and Civil Society, and as faculty advisor for a Ford Foundation funded program bringing civil society leaders together across Africa to prepare for leadership transitions in their organizations. Before joining Indiana University, Dr. Benjamin was on the faculty at George Mason University, worked for the U.S. Department of Treasury’s Community Development Financial Institutions Fund, was a Congressional Fellow on the Senate Banking Committee, and worked for community organizations in Cape Town South Africa during the democratic transition. She has a BA from the University of Minnesota and a Masters and Doctorate in City and Regional Planning and from Cornell University.

Ruth Sessler Bernstein is an associate professor of Nonprofit Management at Pepperdine University teaching nonprofit management classes and the Service Leadership capstone course. Her publication and research interests focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion in leadership and governance, with an emphasis on nonprofit organizations. She is a regular presenter at the Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action and the Academy of Management. Her publications have appeared in numerous nonprofit and management journals, including Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly; Nonprofit Management & Leadership; Equity, Diversity and Inclusion: An International Journal; and Journal of Business Ethics. Most recently she has published two books. The first, Performance through Diversity and Inclusion: Leveraging Organizational Practices for Equity and Results (Routledge, 2022), with Paul Salipante and Judith Weisinger, and the second, Diversity and Inclusion in Nonprofit Governance—No More Excuses! (Sagamore-Venture, 2021), with Chris Fredette. She earned an undergraduate degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and MS from Brown University, both in geology. Subsequently she received an MA in Philanthropy from Indiana University’s School of Philanthropy, and a Doctorate of Management from Case Western Reserve University's Weatherhead School of Management. She has served on numerous nonprofit boards and enjoys providing pro bono services to many nonprofit organizations.

John M. Bryson is McKnight Presidential Professor Emeritus at the Hubert H. Humphrey School of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota. He works in the areas of leadership, strategic management, and collaboration. He is most known for his best-selling and award-winning Strategic Planning for Public and Nonprofit Organizations, 5th Edition (2018). The sixth edition of the book will be published in 2024, and for the first time with a co-author—Bert George. Professor Bryson has received many awards for his work, including lifetime scholarly achievement awards from the American Society for Public Administration (2011), the Public Management Research Association (2018), the Public and Nonprofit Division of the Academy of Management (2019), the Public Policy and Public Administration Sections of the American Political Science Association (2020), and the International Research Society for Public Management (2021). He has served in a variety of roles at the university and the Humphrey School, including twice being associate dean. He has consulted with a wide range of government, nonprofit, and business organizations.

Thad D. Calabrese is a professor at the Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service at New York University where his teaching and research focus on the financial management of public and not-for-profit organizations. Dr. Calabrese leads the school’s specialization in finance and has worked to expand and update the curriculum in this area. He also served as the member-elected treasurer of the Association for Research on Nonprofit and Voluntary Action (ARNOVA) from 2017 to 2021, as well as the member-elected chair of the Association for Budgeting and Financial Management (ABFM) from 2020 to 2021. Dr. Calabrese is an active researcher and serves as an Associate Editor for Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly, and also serves on the editorial boards of Public Budgeting and Finance, Nonprofit Management & Leadership, and the Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory. Prior to academia, he worked in the New York City Office of Management and Budget, and then as a consultant working with not-for-profit organizations.

Charmagne E. Campbell-Patton is a second-generation evaluator and twelfth-generation European settler based in Minnesota, USA. Her professional experience spans 15 years of program design, implementation, and evaluation work across a range of fields, including youth engagement, education, criminal and juvenile justice, and philanthropy. She specializes in qualitative research methods and utilization-focused developmental evaluation. She is also a co-founder of the Blue Marble Evaluation network. She holds a BA in Political Science from Grinnell College and an MA in International Peace and Conflict Resolution from American University’s School of International Service. She is co-author of the 5th edition of Utilization-Focused Evaluation, and has written several articles and blog posts on a range of evaluation topics. A global citizen with deep local roots, she resides near the Mississippi River on Dakota land in Minneapolis with her husband, two young children, cat, and dog.

Alnoor Ebrahim is professor of Management at The Fletcher School, and the Tisch College of Civic Life, at Tufts University. His research examines the challenges of performance measurement, accountability, and governance facing organizations with a social purpose. Professor Ebrahim’s latest book, Measuring Social Change: Performance and Accountability in a Complex World (Stanford University Press) received awards from the Financial Times and Impact & Sustainable Finance Faculty Consortium, and The Alliance for Nonprofit Management. He is also the author of the award-winning NGOs and Organizational Change: Discourse, Reporting, and Learning (Cambridge University Press). He serves on advisory boards to the Stanford Social Innovation Review (SSIR) and the World Bank's Global Partnership for Social Accountability. He previously served on a working group established by the G7 to create global guidelines on social impact measurement, on Acumen’s Lean Data advisory council, and on the board of Imago Global Grassroots. His prior research led to Congressional Testimony on improving the World Bank’s information disclosure policy. Before joining the Tufts faculty, Professor Ebrahim taught at Harvard Business School, where he chaired two executive programs for social sector leaders, and also at Virginia Tech. He received his doctorate and master’s degrees from Stanford University, and his Bachelor of Science from M.I.T.

Lewis Faulk is an associate professor of Public Administration and Policy in the School of Public Affairs at American University, where he is also a Faculty Fellow of American University’s Metropolitan Policy Center and Affiliated Faculty of American University’s Center for Innovation. He is editor-in-chief of Nonprofit Management & Leadership, a leading peer-review journal for nonprofit management research. He also co-leads the Nonprofit Panel Data Project, a collaboration among American University, George Mason University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Urban Institute, and Independent Sector to develop and support rigorous, data-intensive research on the nonprofit sector, with funding from the Generosity Commission and the National Science Foundation.
