Providing guidance on the application of the press-in piling method, to satisfy the requirements of geo-structures. It covers actual examples of the press-in piling method applied to various geo-structures, such as temporary and permanent retaining walls, cofferdams, cut-off walls, foundation piles.
The Second International Conference on Press-in Engineering (ICPE) 2021 was organized by the International Press-in Association (IPA). The conference is held every three years and the main theme this time is "Evolution and Social Contribution of Press-in Engineering for Infrastructure Development, and Disaster Prevention and Mitigation". These proceedings contain 2 keynote lectures, 3 state-of-the-art lectures and about 60 papers from more than 10 countries.
This publication provides good practice guidance on the application of the press-in piling method, to satisfy the requirements of geo-structures which are embedded utilizing prefabricated piles. It covers actual examples of the press-in piling method applied to various geo-structures, such as temporary and permanent retaining walls, cofferdams, cut-off walls, foundation piles etc.
The content addresses the technical and construction issues relating to the selection of the appropriate type of press-in piling method, in accordance with required structural design criteria and soil and working conditions.
The aim of this publication is to concisely describe practical uses of the press-in piling method for project owners, designers, contractors, academic researchers and other people in the construction industry.

Dr. Tatsunori MATSUMOTO obtained his Bachelor of Engineering and Master of Science from Kanazawa University, Japan. He joined the Department of Civil Engineering of Kanazawa University in 1981 as research associate. He received the degree of Doctor of Engineering from Kyoto University in 1989. He became an Associate Professor in 1991 and promoted to a Professor in August 1999. He retains an active involvement in research into pile dynamics and deformation of pile foundations including piled rafts subjected to load combinations. He is a member of the Japanese Geotechnical Society and the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering. He is Vice-President of the International Press-in Association. He has published more than 250 technical papers, including more than 60 Journal papers. Dr. Katsutoshi UENO graduated Hokkaido University, Japan in 1989, and obtained his Master of Engineering in 1991. He worked as a research associate in The University of Utsunomiya from 1991 to 1998. Then he moved to Tokushima University. In 2001, he received the degree Doctor of Engineering from Tokyo Institute of Technology. Currently he works as an Associate Professor of Geotechnical Engineering in the field of Disaster Science and Mitigation, Tokushima University. His research interests are in fields of deformation and stability problems of Geo-structures, such as shallow foundations, retaining structures, unexpected underground cavities. Dr. Koichi ISOBE is an associate professor in the Division of Civil Engineering, Hokkaido University. He received the degree of Doctor Engineering from Kyoto University in 2007 and started his career at Nagaoka University of Technology. He has a strong interest in Interaction between Soils and Foundations, Soil Dynamics, Earthquake Engineering, Slope Stability and Data Science. He is also a member of Technical Committee (TC1 Application of cantilever type steel tubular pile wall embedded to stiff ground) in the International Press-in Association (IPA). He presents the stability of cantilever type steel tubular pile retaining wall embedded to stiff ground and the size effect of footing in ultimate bearing capacity of intermediate soil by using Rigid Plastic Finite Element Method (RPFEM) in this book. Dr. Hidetoshi NISHIOKA worked at the Railway Technical Research Institute from 2001 to 2019. He researched foundation structures using sheet piles and its design methods and code writing of design methods for the foundation of railway structures. He received the degree of Doctor of Engineering from Tokyo Institute of Technology in 2009. In 2019 he became a professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Science and Engineering, Chuo University. His current research activities focus not only on summarizing the results of experiments and analyses on foundation structures and underground structures but also on linking them to social implementation as practical design, construction, and maintenance methods. Dr. Koji WATANABE is an associate professor of the Department of Civil Engineering, Aichi institute of Technology, Japan. He received the degree of Doctor Engineering from Tokyo Institute of Technology in 2015. His research interests are foundation engineering involving pile foundation, shallow foundation, ground improvement and geotechnical centrifuge model tests. He developed some pile design and construction methods based on his research findings. He aims to develop design and construction methods on geotechnical engineering by conducting fundamental and applied researches.
