This title discusses quantifying hazards, simulating their effects and analysing the risk potential. The papers cover all aspects of risk analysis and hazard mitigation.
The analysis and management of risk and mitigation of hazards is essential in our increasingly complex society. Containing edited versions of papers presented at the Third International Conference on Computer Simulation in Risk Analysis and Hazard Mitigation (RISK), this volume covers a series of important research topics which are of current interest and which have practical applications. The contributions included are concerned with all aspects of risk analysis and hazard mitigation, ranging from specific assessment of risk to mitigation associated with both natural and anthropogenic hazards. Over 70 papers are included and these cover specific topics within the following subject headings: estimation of risks; hazard prevention, management and control; emergency response; data collection and analysis; air quality studies; soil and water contamination; floods and droughts; seismic hazards; and landslides and slope movements.

Section 1 Estimation of risks: Probabilistic risk assessment: the tool for uncertainty reduction in geotechnical engineering; Volcanic risk zoning in the island of Ischia (Italy); Real options in mine project budgeting - Polish mining industry example; Stochastic analysis as a risk-assessment technique in mineral projects evaluation; Risk assessment for hazardous waste disposal in abandoned mines; Dam-break hazard assessment with geomorphic flow computation, using WOLF 2D hydrodynamic software; Risk assessment of Ere-li vertical wall breakwater in Turkey; PARASODE: a programme for the probabilistic design and assessment of sea defences; Hydrological risk phenomena caused by rainfalls in the north-western part of Romania; Assessment of the impact of sediment transport on roads in a Mediterranean environment; Testing trends in annual maximum discharge series in Israel; Fragility curves, damage matrices, and wind induced loss estimation; Navigational risk in methods of assessing the safety of the vessel's mooring manoeuvre; Malfunctions of railway traffic control systems -failure rate analysis; Navigation risk assessment for vessels manoeuvring in various conditions; Second order effects design of reinforced concrete framed structures according to EC2-reliability analysis; The development of a new holistic risk assessment model for the inclusion of public perceptual values in the decision-making process; Risk assessment using a generalized Pareto-based bivariate model; Estimating reliability in a strength-stress interference model: classical and bayesian perspectives; Role of computer tools in risk management - applications in forestry; Structures and organisation of an information tool dedicated to simulation and management of environmental risks; Dependence relationships modelling in financial appraisal under uncertainty. Section 2 Hazard prevention, management and control: Natural disaster reduction in Europe: a Don Quixotic project in the face of a changing world?; A decisional model for dynamic allocation of resources in natural disasters management; Model based risk management of security critical systems; Evolution of the erosive process after a watershed fire: An example: Prinos torrent, Thassos Island, Greece; Scheduling hazardous material shipments; Integrated security systems for hazard prevention, management and control in the Italian high speed train line; Structural issues in seismic risk assessment of existing oil storage tanks; Safety of construction in intensive use of space. Section 3 Emergency response: Covao do Meio dam. Automatic acquisition and remote transfer of monitoring data; Testing a European emergency management methodology in a simulated flood event; Risk of oil spill pollution off the Portuguese coast; Emergency procedures management in the chemical industry.
