Presenting the latest research on the sustainable development of energy systems, this book provides a broad and holistic perspective on various aspects of renewable energy sources and grid integration. It highlights the integration of renewable and alternative systems into existing infrastructures, and explores the synchronization of environmental and development needs with other social challenges. The research presented is supported by original illustrations and tables, and provide the basis for future research on the topic. Offering an invaluable resource to those working in sustainable development, this book is also intended for students and researchers of engineering, economics and social sciences, as well as government entities and librarians.

Dr In_. Eur Ing Brian Azzopardi (PhD PGCHE BEng(Hons) CertFE), is a Senior Lecturer II, Institute Vocational Coordinator, and Head of Energy Research Group at MCAST, and is a Visiting Senior Research Fellow at Oxford Brookes University, Visiting Academic at London School of Commerce and Anglia Ruskins University. He is former Associate Professor at Kaunas University of Technology in Lithuania. He is also Senior Member of the IEEE, Member of the IET and Member of the EI as well as Chartered Engineer and Energy Institute Chartered Energy Engineer. Dr Azzopardi has pioneered growth of clean energy research capacity, activities and institutional portfolio by grooming students and researchers, knowledge promotions, industry-led collaborations and active participation in engineering societies. Spearheaded UK, Maltese, Lithuanian and EU funded projects in the Energy field and acclaimed projects like electric vehicles and a technology span in photovoltaics. Dr In_. Eur Ing Azzopardi is a leading expert in the areas of energy and environmental economics, and optimisation and decision making techniques. He has worked and published in several application domains including electric vehicles, autonomous vehicles, photovoltaics, electrical energy, wind energy and biomass. Together with his undergraduate and graduate students and other collaborators he has published more than 80 articles in archival journals, edited books and refereed conference proceedings and presentations. He holds a PhD from The University of Manchester. In less than 10 years, Dr In_. Eur Ing Azzopardi has participated in over 30 mostly industry-led research projects/ grants totalling over EUR10Million. He has been involved as principal / co-investigator / researcher in a number of industry funded pilot scale projects as well as projects funded by the UK Technology Strategy Boards (TSB), UK Engineering and Physical Science Council (EPSRC) (WISE-PV and Hybrid Solar Cell projects) and the European Commission (BATTERIE, HI-CON PV, StableNextSol, RELY projects), ERANETMED programme (EdGe-WiSe, 3D-Mgrid projects), the FUSION programme supported by the Malta Council for Science and Technology (Water Resource Management project) and several projects supported by the Lithuanian Research Council.
