The salience of deposit insurance has increased enormously in recent years as a result of the thrifts crisis in the USA and its proposed introduction to the European Community. This book provides a comprehensive analysis of deposit insurance as an instrument aimed at pursuing financial stability and overall unsophisticated savers' protection. The first part of the book reviews the rationale for deposit insurance in the light of the special nature of the banking firm. The problems of deposit insurance, especially moral hazard, are investigated with the backdrop of recent history and theoretical work. Various proposals for the reform of deposit insurance are examined so as to reduce their defects. The book concludes with a description of the various systems of deposit insurance in force in the European Community, Japan, Canada and the USA.
