This book provides a summary of state-of-the-art methods and research in the analysis of credit. It thereby supplies very useful insights into this vital area of finance that has previously been insufficiently taught and researched in academia. The book, which includes an overview of processes that are utilized for estimating the probability of default and the loss given default for a wide array of debts, will be useful in evaluating individual loans and bonds as well as managing entire portfolios of such assets. Each of the chapters in the book is written by authors who presented and discussed their contemporary research and knowledge at the First International Conference on Credit Analysis and Risk Management that was held July 21–23, 2011 at Oakland University, Michigan, USA. This collection of writings by these experts in the field is uniquely designed to enhance the understanding of credit analysis in a fashion that permits a broad perspective on the science and art of credit analysis.

Joseph H. Callaghan has been a faculty member at Oakland University since 1982, where he was promoted to Professor of Accounting in 2002. He graduated from the University of Illinois with a doctorate in Accountancy. Joe’s research includes valuation using financial accounting information, capital markets studies, accounting information systems, and financial risk measurement and analysis. He also serves as a consultant for businesses in the areas of systems development, financial analysis, and risk assessment.Austin Murphy, who received his PhD in Finance from the University of Georgia in 1984, has been a Professor of Finance at Oakland University for the last 27 years, serving intermittently elsewhere such as with the Federal Home Loan Bank Board in 1988–89. Nearly a hundred of his articles have been published in academic journals, and he has had over 10 of his books published, including seven editions of Scientific Investment Analysis. The latter book is believed to be the first and still the best book explaining in detail the process of credit analysis via a uniquely well-defined structure that facilitates rapid learning of this art, including for those without any experience in the area.Hong Qian received her PhD in Finance from the Pennsylvania State University in 2006. She is an Assistant Professor of Finance at Oakland University. Her research includes equity issuance, management buyouts, analyst forecasts and recommendations. She is a CFA charterholder and a member of the CFA Society of Detroit.
