Companies change how they implement their processes and develop their products on a regular basis. It is not always easy for them to know what developmental changes are best, however. Looking at the Broad Picture: Smarter Software Development for Irish Companies is a story of how ten Irish software companies evolved in this regard during the last decade. Software, and how to manage it effectively, has now gone through several iterations. This volume describes some of these iterations and illustrates what happened to a range of Irish companies as they progressed from training to a newer way of doing business. Specific change-processes and the benefits of each are discussed here, along with suggested developments for the future.

Dr Marty Sanders has been involved in the software business for nearly fifty years ranging from developer, maintainer, manager, consultant and trainer through to Specialist in Software Process Improvement. She finally decided to study for a PhD in order to take advantage of her many years of accumulated knowledge and experience. Amongst other things, she has been active in the development of international standards for many years, researching those software standards specifically suited to smaller companies—ISO/IEC 29110 included.Dr Ita Richardson is Senior Lecturer in the Department of Computer Science and Information Systems at the University of Limerick. She is also the Research Area Leader for Global Software Development research in Lero—the Irish Software Engineering Research Centre. Dr Richardson’s research focuses on software processes in different environments and domains. She has studied its implementation in the medical device, automotive and financial services domains, and within global software development environments and SMEs. She has over 100 publications in refereed journals and conferences. Dr Richardson supervises PhD and MSc students, some of whom are part-time and industry-based, and lectures to undergraduate and postgraduate students at the University of Limerick.Dr Mícheál Ó hAodha is a librarian at the University of Limerick, Ireland, where he also teaches part-time in the Department of History on a number of History, Politics and Social Studies (HPSS) courses relating to the history of Irish Migration. He has published more than thirty books including Irish Travellers: Representations and Realities (Dublin: Liffey Press, 2006) and On the Margins of Memory: Recovering the Migrant Voice (UK: Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2007).
