The CTA was set up in 1983 in the Netherlands under the second ACP-EEC Convention between the ten member states of the European Commmunity and 69 African, Caribbean and Pacific states. This book addresses itself to the problems of poultry production under tropical and sub-tropical conditions. In these countries the constraints to increase productivity are very different to those in Western countries. Apart from the obvious climatic differences, there exist chronic problems in obtaining adequate food supplies and at the same time lack of disease control may make intensive production unprofitable or even untenable. This book addresses these problems and to see which of the concepts involved in modern poultry production can be adapted to the tropics and which should be avoided.

Developments that have taken place within the poultry industry during the last forty years; the place of poultry in food producing systems in developing countries; breeds and strains of poultry and their improvements; the effect of the tropical environment on poultry and possibilities for modifications; poultry nutrition, intensive systems of egg production; intensive systems of poultry meat production; eggs and egg incubation; disease and disease prevention; marketing poultry products; maximising profits from poultry
