The Committee for the International Prize for Biology decides annually the speciality within the field of biology for which prize will be awarded and in 1989 the prize was awarded in the area of Marine Biology. Coincidentally with the awarding of the Prize each year, an international symposium on topics relevant to the Prize is held under the support of the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture. This volume contains the papers presented at the symposium held at Tokai Daigaku Koyu Kaikan in Tokyo on the 29th and 30th of November, 1989. The subject matter of the papers ranges broadly throughout the area of Marine Biology reflecting in many cases, the interdisciplinary approach required in ocean and coastal research. This work involves work on the natural history of the organisms, their histology, physiology, biochemistry and biophysics and their interactions with the biological, chemical and physical environment.

Introduction (J. Mauchline and T. Nemoto). I. Marine Physiological Studies 1. Endocrine control of osmoregulation in migratory fishes (T. Hirano). 2. Sensory systems and behavior of larval fish (J.H.S. Blaxter). 3. Biochemical adaptations of deep-sea animals: insights into biogeography and ecological energetics (G.N. Somero, E. Dahlhoff and A. Gibbs). 4. Some adaptations of marine animals to physical conditions in the sea (E.J. Denton). II. Characteristics of marine ecosystems 1. Trophic relationships in marine pelagic ecosystems (T.R. Parsons). 2. Ecological explanations in marine and terrestrial systems (J.H. Steele). 3. Some modern concepts in deep-sea pelagic studies: patterns of growth in the different horizons (J. Mauchline). III. Benthic ecosystem and impact of marine pollution on the sea bottom 1. The requirement for additional research in the assessment of environmental disturbances associate with deep seabed mining (H. Thiel). 2. The biogeography of the Mariana Trough hydrothermal vents (R.R. Hessler and P.F. Lonsdale). 3. Marine biology today (D.J. Crisp). IV. Phytoplankton and algae studies 1. Ecology and taxonomy of marine Vibrioanceae (U. Simidu). 2. Experimental study of the marine cyanophyte Trichodesmium (K. Ohki, P.G. Falkowski, J.G. Rueter and Y. Fujita). V. Chondrus crispus (Irish moss), an ecologically important and commercially valuable species of red seaweed of the North Atlantic Ocean (J.L. McLachlan). VI. Polar ecosystem and its dynamics 1. Algae-copepod-fish link associated with Antarctic sea ice (T. Hoshiai, A. Tanimura, K. Watanabe and M. Fuckuchi). 2. Marine ecology of polar seas - a comparison: Arctic and Antarctic (J.-O. Stromberg).
