The book recounts the history and achievements of research at the International Livestock Research Institute and its predecessors. Describing mixed crop and livestock systems' impact on the global environment, it also covers animal genetics, production, health and disease control, land management, public policy, and economics.
Providing the first evidenced-based global estimates of the many scientific, economic, policy, and capacity development impacts of livestock research in and for developing countries. This volume is an indispensable guide and reference for veterinarians, animal and forage scientists, and anyone working for the equitable and sustainable development of the world's poorer agricultural economies. Livestock is one the fastest growing agricultural sectors, with most growth occurring in developing countries. For more than four and a half decades one global centre has been mandated to conduct research on leveraging the benefits and mitigating the costs of livestock production in poor countries. This book focuses on the achievements and impacts of the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and its predecessors, the International Livestock Centre for Africa (ILCA) and the International Laboratory for Research on Animal Diseases (ILRAD). The scientific and economic impacts of tropical livestock research detailed in this work reveal valuable lessons for reducing world hunger, poverty and environmental degradation. Describing the impacts of smallholder livestock systems on the global environment, the book also covers animal genetics, production, health and disease control, and livestock-related land management, public policy, and economics, all with useful pointers for future livestock-for-development research.

John McIntire (Edited By) John McIntire is an independent economist, living in Santa Barbara, California. He received his PhD in International Relations from the Fletcher School in 1980. He was an agricultural economist at the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) for several years in 1980s, working in Burkina Faso and Niger, where he did some of the first management studies of smallholder agriculture in francophone Africa. He subsequently was a researcher at the International Livestock Center for Africa (ILCA) in Ethiopia, work that led to the publication of Crop-Livestock Interactions in sub-Saharan Africa, a well-cited book of which he is principal author. He worked for more than 20 years as a staff member and Director at the World Bank, where he managed some of the Bank's largest programs in sub-Saharan Africa. He recently retired as Associate Vice-President for Program Management at the International Fund for Agricultural Development. Delia Grace (Edited By) Delia Grace is an epidemiologist and veterinarian with more than 20 years' experience in developing countries. She graduated from several leading universities and currently leads research on zoonoses and foodborne disease at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) based in Nairobi, Kenya. Her research interests include food safety, emerging diseases, gender studies, and animal welfare. Her career has spanned the private sector, field-level community development and aid management, as well as research. She has lived and worked in Asia, west and east Africa and authored or co-authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications as well as training courses, briefs, films, articles and blog posts.
