Based on lectures given at an international conference in 1991, this work reflects the current dyanamic and evolutionary stage of magnetic resonance microscopy, offering information from both academic and industrial research. It is intended to be of use to specialists and non-specialists.
Magnetic resonance microscopy is a rapidly developing field of research with applications in a variety of different areas. This book is based on lectures given at the International Conference on NMR Microscopy held in Heidelberg in September 1991. It is, however, far more than the proceedings of this meeting. The lecturers have provided in-depth contributions on their fields. The topics covered are: magnetic resonance imaging methods (NMR and ESR); applications to materials science; imaging of flow and diffusion; and applications in biomedicine and agriculture. In this way both an extensive overview and an up-to-date source of references in primarily nonmedical imaging are given. The book will stimulate the further development and application of magnetic resonance imaging as an analytical tool in industry and in research.

Part 1 Imaging methods and commercial aspects: NMR microscopy using projection reconstruction; high resolution NMR imaging of solids; three-dimensional NMR imaging of solids; slice selection and phase encoding techniques in solid-state NMR imaging; relaxation time analysis and parameter-selective imaging in materials research; magnetic angle rotating frame imaging in materials; realization of NMR microscopy in a flexible spectrometer; scanning and computer tomography-ESR microscopy; applications of EPR imaging to materials, agriculture and medicine. Part 2 Materials science: NMR imaging of polymers - methods and applications; applications of NMR imaging to polymers; NMR imaging of composition and defects in industrial elastomers; investigation of ageing process and cross-linking in elastomers by parameter-selective NMR microscopy; fluid and solid state MRI of biological and non-biological ceramics; magnetic resonance imaging of carbon implants in the rabbit condyle of the femur; MRI studies of in-situ polymerization reactions at elevated temperatures; investigation of diffusion and photopolymerization processes by NMR imaging; fluid displacement in porous media using NMR microscopy; imaging the dynamics of chemical waves - the Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction. Part 3 Flow and diffusion: translational motion imaging with pulsed gradient spin echo methods; structure-related diffusion in microporous crystallites; NMR imaging studies of velocity and concentration distributions in flows; approaches to flow statistics, structure correlations and 2D spectroscopy using characteristic functions; petrochemical applications of pulsed-field gradient NMR; rapid arterial flow and decelleration immediately below the carotid bifurcation - effects of occlusions and stenoses. Part 4 Plants and agriculture: NMR microscopy at 500 MHz - cellular resolution in biosystems; applications of chemical-shift microscopy to non-invasive histochemistry of plant materials; some aspects of NMR microscopy applications in plant science and agriculture. Part 5 Biomedicine: high-field NMR imaging of tumour models; MR microscopy of disease models; magentic resonance imaging in drug discovery research; boron-11 MRI and MRS; high-field localized 1H NMR spectroscopy; spectral-spatial skin imaging with modulated gradient and simultaneous field scan (MOSS); proton imaging after dynamic polarization. Part 6 Quot sunt anni?: magnetic resonance reflections.
