This book explores the ways in which post-modernist and post-structural approaches can enrich the study of the sporting past. Throughout the chapters, the internationally respected authors draw from their own vast experiences within the study of sport history to collectively promote post-modernism and post-structuralism as forms of social theory that can guide the future of sport historical research. The book demonstrates how sport studies scholars might be more adventurous in their thinking, research, and writing.

Richard Pringle is an associate professor of socio-cultural studies of sport at the University of Auckland in New Zealand. He is the co-author (with Pirkko Markula) of Foucault, Sport and Exercise: Power, Knowledge and Transforming the Self (2006) and serves on the editorial boards of Sociology of Sport Journal, Asia-Pacific Journal of Health, Sport and Physical Education and Annals of Leisure Research. His research has appeared in numerous journals associated with sport sociology, sport history, leisure and physical education. Dr Murray Phillips teaches the history of sport in the School of Human Movement Studies at the University of Queensland in Australia. He has written on the historical aspects of sport as it relates to commodification, digital history, gender, film, museums, race and war, as well as the ontological, epistemological and methodological aspects of sport history. His recent books include Deconstructing Sport History: A Postmodern Analysis (2006), Swimming Australia (2009) and Representing the Sporting Past in Museum and Halls of Fame (2012).
