The book presents latest comprehensive information on the various aspects of developing strategies in animal nutrition for environment friendly livestock production system. The book has covered the concepts like Animal agriculture and carbon footprints; Strategies to mitigate enteric methane production; Methane production potential of different feedstuffs, so as to formulate the rations with low enteric methane production; Nutritional interventions like manipulating rumen microbial ecosystem; Strategic supplementation of nutraceuticals; Improving the bioavailability of nutrients at cellular level by using nanotechnology; Forage production throughout the year and production of hydroponics green fodders. The impact of pesticide residues and toxicants in feedstuffs on the productive and reproductive performance has been covered exhaustively. Biomarkers for assessing the nutritional status of dairy animals and alternate evaluation techniques are also discussed in details. The book covers the development of functional/designer animal products by manipulating the feeding practices to prove the saying of Hippocrate ';Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food'. This book will be useful and highly informative for PG students and faculty, researchers/scientists and others working in a particular specialized field in Animal Nutrition.

Dr M.P.S. Bakshi has served PAU and then GADVASU in various capacities for over 31 years including four and a half years as the Head of the Department of Animal Nutrition, GADVASU, Ludhiana. His commitment to basic and applied research enabled him to handle 18 research projects successfully, which were sponsored by State, National and International funding agencies. His contributions includes Nutrient requirements of buffaloes, Processing and evaluation of poor quality crop residues, Exploring novel feed resources for livestock, Nutritional status of dairy animals in rural and peri-urban dairy complexes, Strategic supplementation of limiting nutrients and herbal feed additives etc. to improve livestock productivity, Feeding of high yielding crossbred cattle during transition phase, Methane production potential of different feedstuffs, compounded and complete feeds, Mitigation of enteric methane emission, Rumen microbial diversity in small ruminants. Dr Bakshi has 311 publications to his credit, including 130 research articles; lead/ status papers, chapters in books, technical bulletins, extension articles etc. His team has received Best research paper awards in National and International Animal Nutrition Conferences. ICAR awarded ‘Scientist Emeritus' status to him.>< Dr (Ms) M. Wadhwa did her MSc and PhD in Biochemistry in 1980 and 1986 from Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana. She pursued Post Doctoral Research at Memorial University of New-Foundland, Canada. She started her professional career as Assistant Biochemist in Department of Animal Nutrition, PAU, Ludhiana in November, 1987. Dr. Wadhwa is continuing her research in Nutritional Biochemistry (Ruminants) as Senior Biochemist in the Department of Animal Nutrition, GADVASU, Ludhiana. Her pioneering work on Improving efficiency of nutrient utilization in poor quality crop residues, Nutritional status of Dairy Animals in Punjab using tools like purine derivatives and milk urea nitrogen, Methane production potential of feedstuffs available in the region, Enteric methane mitigation, Evaluation of novel feed resources (e.g. top feeds, fruit and vegetable waste as livestock feed), Strategic supplementation of limiting nutrients in high yielding cross-bred cattle including during transition phase and Microbial diversity under different feeding regimens in small ruminants has won her peer and global accolades. She has 211 publications to her credit, including 90 research articles in national and international peer reviewed journals, a number of technical bulletins and popular articles. She has successfully guided 5 MSc/ MVSc students. Dr Wadhwa during her 2 consecutive tenures as the Editor of the Indian Journal of Animal Nutrition has made significant efforts to invite research papers by eminent academics and researchers from all over India and abroad. She served as the Secretary of Animal Nutrition Association of India, besides being a life member of number of professional societies and Associations and contributed significantly in the field of Animal Nutrition. She has attended and contributed to academic discussions and conferences in Canada, Malaysia, China and Thailand and has been acknowledged with best paper awards.
