This textbook is targeted at senior undergraduate and graduate students with diverse backgrounds who plan to gain knowledge about analysis and design of RF and microwave circuits. Topics that are discussed in this book are grouped in one or several chapters and can be studied separately if desired. A brief review of wireless technologies and applications is provided in Chapter 1. In this textbook, the CMOS technology introduced in Chapter 2 is used as the mainstream technology for RF applications. Despite the fact that many current microwave blocks are built using bipolar or FET technologies, we have pursued only CMOS circuit design mainly because with time, RF CMOS technology would increasingly take over the other technologies. Chapters 3-5 are introductory concepts on noise, linearity and high frequency analysis (S-parameters and Smith charts) and can be omitted if the reader is familiar with these concepts. Chapters 6-9 provide design perspective for various types of amplifiers, including narrowband and wideband amplifiers and low noise amplifiers. Chapter 9 reviews CMOS RF mixers while Chapter 10 focuses on power amplifier designs. Chapters 11 and 12 focus on oscillators, frequency synthesizers and their phase noise considerations. Finally, Chapters 13 and 14 provide practical considerations on RF measurements and simulations. When it comes to the design of an RF circuit there are two common perspectives: that of a microwave engineer and that of an analog circuit designer. A microwave engineer sees every transistor or circuit as a black box with assigned S-parameter values and uses impedance matching techniques often graphically represented on a Smith chart to design passive components and circuits around the black box. By contrast an analog circuit designer views every element with a small or large signal model comprising lumped elements and often disengages him/herself from electromagnetic effects such as distributed effects,
