Prof. Dr. Ullrich Scherf studied chemistry at Friedrich Schiller University of Jena, Germany, obtaining his Ph.D. in 1988 on the synthesis of PPV-type organic semiconductors and carbonization of polymer films. He subsequently spent one year at the Institute for Animal Physiology of the Saxonian Academy of Sciences in Leipzig isolating and characterizing of cockroach hormones. He joined the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research, Mainz, in 1990 and completed his habilitation in 1996 on polyarylene-type ladder polymers. He followed a call to the University of Potsdam, Germany, onto a professorship for polymer chemistry. In 2002, he became full professor for Macromolecular Chemistry at Bergische Universität Wuppertal, Germany. He has published over 350 refereed papers and received the Meyer-Struckmann Research Award in 1998.
Bridged Polyphenylenes - from Polyfluorenes to Ladder Polymers.- Polyfluorenes for Device Applications.- Poly(dibenzosilole)s.- Poly(2,7-carbazole)s and Related Polymers.- Polyfluorenes with On-Chain Metal Centers.- Fluorene-Based Conjugated Oligomers for Organic Photonics and Electronics.- Polyfluorene Photophysics.- Structure and Morphology of Polyfluorenes in Solutions and the Solid State.- Optically Active Chemical Defects in Polyfluorene-Type Polymers and Devices.- Single Molecule Spectroscopy of Polyfluorenes.
From the reviews:
"The editors succeed in their aim of presenting an overview of research on polyfluorenes and related heteroanalogues. ... The book is well edited ... and the index is useful. The chapters are particularly strong in summarizing the various synthetic routes to polyfluorenes and their monomers. Research scientists and graduate students interested in the chemistry and properties of ployfluorenes should look at this book." (William C. Trogler, Journal of the American Chemical Society, Vol. 131 (8), 2009)
