About the Contributors


Monia Del Pinto: Vice-Chancellor Independent Research Fellow in the School of Architecture, Building, and Civil Engineering at Loughborough University, UK. Monia holds a PhD in urban planning and disaster risk reduction from Loughborough University and an MSc in architectural engineering from Universita’ degli Studi di L’Aquila, Italy. She works at the intersections of architecture, urban planning, heritage studies and disaster management. Her multidisciplinary research aims at innovating tools for effective disaster risk reduction at an urban scale. In her current study, Monia is developing a global methodology to assess vulnerability to climate-induced hazards associated with the spatial networks in heritage cities.

Stephen Emmitt: Professor of Architectural Practice at the University of Bath, Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering. Stephen joined CIBW096 in 1994, while still an architect in practice. He served as press officer from 1996 to 2004 and held the role of Joint Co-ordinator from 2005 to 2011, responsible for organising conferences, editing conference proceedings and providing direction to the working commission. He received a CIB 2009 Programme Committee Commendation for outstanding contribution to CIBW096’s mission. He has written extensively on architectural management and design management. His most recent book is Design Management for Architects, Third Edition, 2024.

Fang Zhou: Lecturer at the School of Architecture and Urban Planning, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China. She was awarded BA in environmental design and BEng in architecture by the University, MSc in architectural studies by the University of Florida and PhD in building and real estate by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Zhou’s research interests include design management and design methodology. Her work has been funded by the Natural Science Foundation of Hubei Province in China, the Fundamental Research Funds for Central Universities in China and a PhD Fellowship in Hong Kong. Zhou is a member of CIB096.

Mary Hardie: Associate Professor in Building Design Management and Architecture at Western Sydney University. Mary has been an academic contributing to teaching and research in construction, design and architecture since the 1990s. Her work focuses on enabling diverse cultural perspectives to find welcoming pathways into satisfying careers in the built environment. She has written extensively on educational perspectives in construction as well as the fostering of innovation and cultural change in industry. CIB W096 Architectural Design and Management has provided her with an excellent forum to discuss the future of the industry with international colleagues and researchers.

Ivanka Iordanova: Associate Professor in the Department of Construction Engineering at ÉTS, Montreal, and a member of GRIDD. After a career as the Director of Innovation at a large general contractor, her teaching and research now focuses on digital innovation and new construction strategies aiming at the realisation of high-quality buildings and infrastructures, through BIM/VDC, Lean Construction and Robotic Fabrication. With a goal of increasing construction productivity, quality and safety, she studies the potential of industrialisation of construction and digital technologies for making the built environment more sustainable, harmonious and empathetic. She is a founding member of Lean Design and Construction Canada.

Aya Jazaierly: Lecturer in Architecture at Loughborough University, the United Kingdom. She is involved in both BArch and MArch programmes, teaching design studio and professional practice. Aya was awarded a PhD by the University of Tokyo. She worked in Arata Isozaki’s office, and as part of Kengo Kuma’s Research Laboratory at the University of Tokyo between 2012 and 2019. She has published on the philosophy of Japanese architects. Her research interests are focused on the design process. This pertains to all the tangible and intangible creative, sociological, political and psychological practices that define the intellectual, formal and aesthetical manifestations of architectural and urban output.

Gabriel Jobidon: Associate Professor in the Department of Construction Engineering at ÉTS and member of GRIDD. He holds a PhD in law from Université Laval, Quebec City, where he studied in the Chaire industrielle de recherche sur la construction écoresponsable en bois. His multidisciplinary research interests include public procurement, collaborative contracts, and adaptation to climate change. He has written several book chapters, academic journal and conference papers on topics including integrated project delivery and collaborative contracting strategies. Gabriel has worked on major infrastructure projects in the Province of Quebec and continues to act as a consultant to public organisations.

Linda Kestle: Associate Professor in Construction at Unitec Institute of Technology, Auckland, New Zealand. She holds a PhD in remote site design management from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, which involved design management modelling for multinational collaborative projects. She is a Fellow of the NZIOB and a Chartered Building Professional. Her long career includes research publications in international conferences and journals, architectural and engineering design consultancy and on-site construction project management. Linda is a member of the CIBW096, and her current research interests include academia–industry research partnerships, digitalisation of construction industry practice and education, the circular economy and sustainable design.

Ania Khodabakhshian: Postdoctoral Researcher at the B John Garrick Institute of Risk Sciences, UCLA. Ania holds a PhD with honours in architecture, built environment and construction engineering from Politecnico di Milano. Her research focuses on the application of artificial intelligence in construction projects, risk management in engineering systems and data-driven building stock energy retrofits. Her work has achieved significant recognition through international accolades such as the CIB Sebestyen Future Leaders’ award and Vistas funding, and publications in leading scientific journals and conferences. She is a member of CIB096, and she collaborates with renowned universities such as MIT, Chalmers Institute of Technology and the University of Salford.

Urša Komac: Senior Lecturer in Architecture at Western Sydney University. She is a registered architect from Europe and holds a BA in architecture and MSc in landscape architecture from the University of Ljubljana and a PhD from the Barcelona School of Architecture. She has worked as an architect and as an architectural educator for more than 20 years in Slovenia, Spain, the United States and Australia. Urša is a member of CIB096, the Chamber of Architecture and Spatial Planning of Slovenia, and is an AACA standing panel member. Her research interests are architecture and the city, public space, heritage and architectural education.

William McKee: Associate Lecturer at the University of Sydney. William is a registered architect in New South Wales, who has studied in Scotland, France and at the Architectural Association in London, where he gained his master’s degree as student of the year, and was nominated for the RIBA President’s Medal for his dissertation. He has practised in London, and currently in Sydney as the Director at Common Office, which was founded on the design of interiors, buildings, urbanism and territory. His current work includes furniture, houses, community buildings and research initiatives. All projects are treated as equal within a rigorous design process.

Marina Machado: International BIM Project Manager. With a background in architecture from her own studio in Brazil, Marina transitioned her expertise into driving digital transformation within the construction realm. Her journey led to Europe, where she spearheaded BIM initiatives, aligning organisational strategies with ISO 19650 standards. Marina’s leadership extended to managing BIM aspects on multimillion-euro construction ventures across diverse sectors such as education, pharmaceuticals and data centres worldwide. She gained a master’s degree in BIM and integrated design from the University of Salford, the United Kingdom. Marina has spoken at numerous international conferences and published articles elucidating BIM implementation for design to manufacture workflows.

Leonardo Manzione: Director of Coordenar, a specialist BIM consultancy and design co-ordination company. Leonardo is also a lecturer on the postgraduate course in Construction Project Management on the Poli-Integra program at the University of São Paulo, Escola Politécnica, Brazil. He holds M.Sc. and PhD in Civil Engineering from the same University. His research and teaching focus mainly on design planning and co-ordination, design management and Building Information Modelling implementation. He has published several articles in scientific journals and at conferences, as well as technical guides and books. He is a member of the committee responsible for the Brazilian version of ISO 19650 standards.

David Morton: Associate Professor at Northumbria University School of Architecture, where he also earned his PhD. His practice work includes award-winning schemes in the United Kingdom and internationally. He has published pedagogic research on design processes, use of CAD and BIM in architectural design and the effects of digital methods on studio projects. David...
