Corrosion Induced Failure of Bridge Post-Tensioned Tendons
CRC Press (Verlag)
978-1-032-35722-5 (ISBN)
This book provides an overview of post-tensioning (PT) in reinforced concrete bridge structures. It specifically addresses corrosion issues that were initially unforeseen but subsequently occurred, raised concerns regarding structural integrity and long-term viability.
It begins by exploring the introduction and background of PT bridge development, addressing post-tensioning systems and the various types of PT bridge construction methods. It also covers corrosion issues and failures that have previously occurred, and other designs for durability. Further, it goes into the details of experimental investigations of corrosion-caused bridge PT tendon failures, and the modeling efforts of wire and strand fractures. Lastly, it provides an assessment of the path forward, suggesting alternatives for current inspection and condition assessment.
This book is highly recommended for graduate and postgraduate students of civil, structural, and mechanical engineering. It will also be an interesting read for structural and civil engineers, and researchers involved with integrity assurance of PT structures.
William H. Hartt served for 40 years as Professor of Ocean Engineering and Director of the Center for Marine Materials at Florida Atlantic University. During that time and subsequently, he directed numerous research projects and served as a consultant. He has authored approximately 100 journal publications pertaining to corrosion, fracture, and failure of engineering materials. Teddy S. Theryo is a Major Bridge Design Engineer with Florida Department of Transportation. He has over 46 years of professional experience, and has served in various capacities in construction, inspection, design, research, repair and durability investigations of major concrete bridges around the world. He graduated from Gadjah-Mada University, Yogyakarta, Indonesia in Civil Engineering and MSCE in structural and mechanic engineering from University of Washington, and is a licensed professional engineer in the States of Florida, and California. His specialty is in the areas of post-tensioned prestressed concrete design of major complex bridges, including segmental concrete and cable supported bridges. He is an active member of several national (ASBI, PTI) and international Technical Committees (fib).
