Since the discovery and synthesis of penicillin, many other families of β-lactam antibiotics have been realized and their extensive use worldwide continues to be a forefront line of action against infectious pathogens. Due to their medicinal activity and potential use as synthetic starting materials, studies on beta-lactams have increased.
Due to their medicinal activity and potential use as synthetic starting materials, studies on beta-lactams have increased significantly. This unique volume takes readers on a tour de force from the concept of antibiosis, to the serendipity of antibiotics, evolution of beta‐lactam development, and the molecular biology of antibiotic resistance. These areas of research have culminated in a deeper understanding of microbiology, particularly in the area of bacterial cell wall synthesis and recycling. Considerable work has been performed by chemists and biologists to continue updating their findings about beta-lactam synthesis.

Features:

Synthesis and Mechanism of Formation of Polyaromatic Beta Lactams

Dr. Bimal Krishna Banik has a remarkable career, spanning significant achievements in teaching, research, mentoring, and professional service. He completed his Ph. D. degree in Chemistry from the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science, Calcutta. Then, he pursued postdoctoral research at Case Western Reserve University, Ohio and Stevens Institute of Technology, New Jersey. Dr. Banik was a Tenured Full Professor in Chemistry and First President’s Endowed Professor in Science & Engineering at the University of Texas-Pan American. He was the Vice President of Research & Education Development at the Community Health Systems of Texas. Currently, Dr. Banik is a Full Professor at the Prince Mohammad Bin Fahd University, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Notably, he has been selected as a Fellow of Five International Scientific Societies and has been designated as a Distinguished Researcher/Distinguished Scientist. Dr. Aparna Das obtained her Ph. D. degree in Material science/nanophysics from Joseph Fourier University based upon the work on “Semiconductor Quantum Dots for Opto-chemical Sensor Application” at French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA), France. Her postdoctoral experiences include working as a research scientist at the California Nano Systems Institute and Electric Engineering Department, University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), USA, and as an experienced researcher at the Nanowiring-Marie Curie Initial Training Network, Georg August Universität Göttingen, Germany. Currently, she is working as an Assistant Professor at Prince Mohammad Bin Fahd University, Saudi Arabia.
