This edited volume covers sustainable biomass valorization and its application in various sectors.

Bioenergy has concerned enormous attention as a promising alternative to conventional energy resources. Abundance of bioresources and their renewable nature provides a distinct advantage to biofuels from sustainability perspective. Biofuels have found increasing applications in the energy and transportation sector in recent years. Blended fuels are being used worldwide. However, several challenges remain to be addressed due to the diverse nature of biomasses and inherent recalcitrant nature of biological materials used as feedstock. This book aims to provide an overview of recent developments in the production of bioenergy and its applications in various areas. Specific emphasis is given to production of biofuels from modern biomass such as agro-forest waste and dedicated non-edible energy crops that do not interfere with food production. The scope of the book covers synthesis and characterization of biologically derived fuels, advances in microbiological methods and enzyme engineering approaches. The book covers techno-economic analysis to identify challenges and prospects for commercialization of biofuels. The directions for future research should pave way for net zero scenario for a sustainable world.

The book will cater to a wide range of readers interested in learning the fundamentals as well as advances in the field of biofuels.

Dr. Dan Bahadur Pal is currently working as an Assistant Professor, Department of Chemical Engineering, Harcourt Butler Technical University, Uttar Pradesh India. He received his M. Tech in 2011 and Ph.D. in 2017, in the field of Chemical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India. He completed his doctorate degree in the field of nanotechnology and catalysis. These nanofibers have very promising potential to provide benefits to nanotechnologies, energy, environment, catalysts, sensors etc. Dr. Pal has more than 81 publications in journals of international repute, six books and thirty book chapters. His research interest is nanotechnology, catalysis, energy and environment and waste management with a special focus in developing process and materials by using waste as raw materials. He also prefers to work on bio-waste processing and value addition.

Dr. Ashutosh Kumar Rai is an Assistant Professor of Biochemistry at the College of Medicine, Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University, Saudi Arabia since 2017. He is involved in teaching, research, laboratory, and administrative work. He completed his Ph.D. (2012) in Applied Biochemistry from the School of Biotechnology, Banaras Hindu University, India with a specialization in microbial biotechnology and molecular biology. During his Ph.D. he worked on cyanotoxins (microcystins) and plant growth-promoting bacteria. After completing his Ph.D., he worked on a project related to enhanced biofuel production in algae using genetic engineering techniques at ICGEB, New Delhi. Furthermore, he has worked on a metaproteomic-based project at ICAR-NBAIM. Dr. Rai worked at the School of Biotechnology, JNU New Delhi as DST-SERB Young Scientist and Principal Investigator in a young scientist scheme project and worked on a host-pathogen interactions-based study. His current area of research interests are Microbial Biotechnology, Molecular Biology and Proteomics, Biomass and Biofuels, and Environmental Microbiology. Additionally, Dr. Rai is actively involved in editorial roles and peer reviewer/ journal referee for several international journals.

Ms. Samra Siddiqui is currently working as a Lecturer in the Department of Health Service Management at the College of Public Health and Health Informatics, University of Hail. Currently, she is pursuing a Ph.D. in Biotechnology with a focus on the anticancer activity and molecular mechanism of a plant therapeutic, plumbagin. Ms. Samra earned her master's degree in biotechnology in 2009 from the Department of Biotechnology, Integral University, Lucknow, India. During her master's program, she conducted research on molecular characterizations of microbes and their antibiotic-resistant patterns.

She has authored articles in peer-reviewed journals and has established various scientific collaborations. Her current areas of research interests include Cancer Biology, Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics, and Environmental Microbiology.
