Advances in Maritime Technology and Engineering comprises a collection of the papers presented at the 7th International Conference on Maritime Technology and Engineering (MARTECH 2024) held in Lisbon, Portugal, on 14-16 May 2024. This Conference has evolved from the series of biannual national conferences in Portugal, which have become an international event, reflecting the internationalization of the maritime sector and its activities. MARTECH 2024 is the seventh of this new series of biannual conferences. This book comprises 142 contributions that were reviewed by an International Scientific Committee.

Advances in Maritime Technology and Engineering is dedicated to maritime transportation, ports as well as maritime safety and reliability. It further comprises sections dedicated to ship design, cruise ship design, and to the structural aspects of ship design, such as ultimate strength and composites, subsea structures as pipelines, and to ship building and ship repair.

The Proceedings in Marine Technology and Ocean Engineering series is dedicated to the publication of proceedings of peer-reviewed international conferences dealing with various aspects of “Marine Technology and Ocean Engineering”. The series includes the proceedings of the following conferences: the International Maritime Association of the Mediterranean (IMAM) conferences, the Marine Structures (MARSTRUCT) conferences, the Renewable Energies Offshore (RENEW) conferences and the Maritime Technology (MARTECH) conferences. The “Marine Technology and Ocean Engineering” series is also open to new conferences that cover topics on the sustainable exploration of marine resources in various fields, such as maritime transport and ports, usage of the ocean including coastal areas, nautical activities, the exploration and exploitation of mineral resources, the protection of the marine environment and is resources, and risk analysis, safety and reliability. The aim of the series is to stimulate advanced education and training through the wide dissemination of the results of scientific research.

Carlos Guedes Soares is a Distinguished Professor of the Engineering School (Instituto Superior Técnico) of the University of Lisbon and Scientific Coordinator of the Centre for Marine Technology and Ocean Engineering (CENTEC), which is a research centre of the University of Lisbon that is rated as “Excellent” and funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology. He concluded his postgraduate studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA in 1976, and at the Norwegian Institute of Technology of the University of Trondheim, in 1984 and has since then been at the University of Lisbon (Technical University of Lisbon until 2013). He has supervised and co-supervised more than 75 PhD students and has about 35,000 citations in the Web of Science. He has been Chair or Co-Chair of various conferences in the series of OMAE, ESREL, IMAM, ISSC, ICCGS, MARSTRUCT, MARTECH and RENEW. He has been Editor of the Reliability Engineering and Systems Reliability Journal for about 30 years, the last 10 of which as Editor-in-Chief. He is Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Marine Science and Application and is member of the Editorial Board of more than 15 Journals. He is a Fellow of SNAME, RINA, IMarEST, ASME and the Portuguese Engineering Association (Ordem dos Engenheiros). He is also a Fellow of the Portuguese Academy of Engineering. Tiago A. Santos is Associate Professor in IST since 2023 in the field of Maritime Transportation, Ports and Logistics. He graduated as a Naval Architect in 1995 at IST and completed a MSc degree, also in Naval Architecture, at the University of Glasgow, in 1999. He obtained a PhD degree in Naval Architecture in 2007 at IST. From 2009 to 2015 he worked in an international classification society as plan approval officer and newbuilding surveyor. From 2015 onwards, he has lectured as full-time professor at IST in the courses dealing with Maritime Transportation, Ports and Logistics. He has edited a scientific book Short Sea Shipping in the Age of Sustainable Development and Information Technology and authored 7 book chapters, 26 international journal papers and 38 papers in international conferences. He is a senior researcher in the Centre for Marine Technology and Ocean Engineering (CENTEC).

The Conference will continue to have a broad scope, covering all aspects of maritime activity including:
• Ship Design (structures, hydrodynamics, machinery)
• Ship Operation
• Ship Building and Repair
• Maritime Transportation and Ports
• Fishing and Aquaculture
• Energy Resources
• Military and Surveillance Vessels
• Recreational Craft and Maritime Tourism
