The themes of this monograph include modern engineering problems of marine traffic engineering, focusing on what this discipline deals with: navigational safety assessment methods. These include:
- criteria of assessing navigational safety in restricted areas,
- navigation risk, as a complex criterion of navigational safety assessment in waterway systems,
- models of navigation risk determination used worldwide,
- conditions of safe operation of ships on waterways determined by using navigation risk,
- minimum safe tug assistance on port waterways,
- navigation risk management in waterway systems with a description of a computer program for model-based tests of navigational safety on Southern Baltic waterways.
Andrzej Bak Graduate of the Faculty of Navigation at the Maritime University of Szczecin. He obtained his Master's degree in marine navigation in 1994. In 2006, he defended his PhD thesis entitled: 'Mathematical model of ship collision situation'. In December 2010, he was awarded the diploma of master mariner. From 2010 to August 2012 he was Director of the Institute of Marine Navigation. He is one of the originators of the electronic chart simulator (ECDIS - Electronic Chart Display and Information System). His PhD thesis included the use of Bayesian networks for the detection and assessment of the navigation situation and, consequently, for the development of the most optimal solution in terms of navigation safety. As a contractor, he participated in: targeted scientific research projects, e.g. Development of an optimum solution for a pilot navigation system; Construction of a pilot docking system for LNG tankers and sea ferries; Construction of a navigation simulator for inland vessels IN - Sim Inland Navigation Simulator. The scientific activities carried out are not only of national character, as exemplified by the participation in international projects, e.g. EfficienSea - Efficient, Safe and Sustainable Traffic at Sea, Baltic Master II, which was a key project in the European Union Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region bringing together all countries in the region. He is the author and co-author of numerous Polish and English language publications.
Prof. Ph.D. engineer captain Stanislaw Gucma was born on November 23, 1945 in Zawada. He graduated from two faculties at the Kaliningrad Technical University: in 1969, the Faculty of Industrial Fisheries, and in 1970, the Faculty of Navigation. He started working in 1971 at the Faculty of Navigation of the Maritime University of Szczecin, where he works to this day. While working at the University, he gave lectures on maritime navigation and maritime traffic engineering and periodically sailed on various types of ships to obtain a diploma of a sea captain in 1989. He served as Rector twice, in 1996-2002 and 2008-2016. Prof. Ph.D. engineer captain Stanislaw Gucma is the founder of the Polish school of maritime traffic engineering, which deals with the qualitative and quantitative description of ship traffic in restricted water areas in terms of navigation safety. He built a scientific team at the University, which currently numbers over 30 scientists, including 10 independent scientists. He is the author of 22 books and monographs and 224 publications.
Marcin Przywarty - has been employed at the Maritime University of Szczecin in the Department of Marine Traffic Engineering since 2005. His research activities are primarily concerned with methods of determining navigational risk and safety. In 2013 he defended his PhD thesis entitled: A stochastic model for assessing navigational safety in open sea areas. As part of the preparation of the dissertation, a computer application was developed to allow a holistic assessment of navigational safety of complex maritime traffic systems. He has participated in many international projects, including: DigiTechPort2030 - Decarbonization of Small Ports' Ecosystems for Efficient Environmental and Energy Management towards South Baltic Fit for 55, PASSport - Operational Platform managing a fleet of semi-autonomous drones exploiting GNSS high Accuracy and Authentication to improve Security & Safety in port areas, SBOil - South Baltic Oil Spill Response Through Clean-Up With Biogenic Oil Binders, Go LNG - Value chain for clean shipping, green ports and Blue growth in Baltic Sea Region. He has also carried out a lot of commissioned work aimed at dimensioning safe maneuvering areas and defining safe operating conditions for ships in ports. His scientific activities have resulted in numerous publications in scientific journals and monographs in Polish and English language.
