This fully revised and updated edition discusses how the rise of H infinity and similar approaches has allowed a combination of practicality, rigour and user interaction to be brought to bear on complex control problems and has helped bridge the gap between control theory and practice.
Concise highly readable book emphasising the concepts and principles that are prerequisite for understanding both traditional and recent control theory.


The text is enlivened by a large number of interesting interludes that complement the main text.


This second edition of Control Theory: A Guided Tour (IEE 1992) has been fully revised and enlarged and now contains an introduction to H infinity methods as well as a new chapter on Artificial Intellingence (AI) methods and a retrospective review of how control theory developed. All the topics covered can be taken further using the extensive annotated reference section.

Professor Ron Leigh achieved an HND and the Freshgate Prize from Sheffield Polytechnic, and MSc from University of London and a Doctorate in Control Engineering from the University of Cambridge. His career has been spent either in designing and implementing control systems for the process industries or in teaching and researching control topics. His current appointment is Professor Associate in Control Engineering at Brunel University. Previous appointments include as Director of the Industrial Control Centre at the University of Westminster and Head, Control Systems Research Laboratory, London. His publications include eight books and an extensive range of research papers.
